Rex Warren, Oregon State University extension farm crops specialist, said this week that because of the un usual weather conditions this year, growers could begin ap plying herbicides now or as soon as the weather turns cool or rainy again. Most chemicals need good soil moisture for best results. Fields that were burned prior to the August rains and have al ready had a spray application should not be retreated until after mid-October, Warren said. Dr. Orvid Lee, USDA agro nomist, advises growers to harrow fields before spraying to reduce scattering straw or due before apply- _ _ grbictdes. He said r e s e a r c h work has shown that yields can be reduc’d by as much as 40 per cent if straw is left lying on top of the ground after harvest. If weeds are fairly large, chemicals should be used at the higher recommended rates. O6U recommendations tor grass seed varieties can be obtained at the county exten sion offices, 665-3181. Fields should still be burned if possible, according to Warren, and straw or unburned residue scattered prior to chemical application. Dr. Lee warned that apply ing many herbicides during warm weather when plants are growing vigorously can result In stand injury. Seaman Graduates Seaman Apprentice Lindsey H.
