C am p C h arg e R em o ved Pioneers Enter Victory Column W ith 12-0 W in Over Wy'East by M IK E H IT E The Sandy Pioneers came back from the football dead F r id a y , and in an in sp irln gd ls- play o f courage and class d e feated Wy’e a s t, 12-0 before many disappointed Eagle root ers. The Red and Black men, c a st ing aside all painful memories of the 1 3 -0 d lsaster which o ver whelmed them against Reynolds Just a week ago, punctured the E agle defense for a touchdown in the firs t two minutes of the second quarter, then flattened their rivals with another s ix - pointer 1 n the third panel. A ctu a lly , the Frontiersm en’ s sup eriority was even greater than the final sco re Indicates. In the second h alf they r e peatedly stormed within close range o f the Wy’ east end zone only to lose control on downs. But even in the face of m is firin g, the Pioneers were ob vious m asters o f the Eagles and earned for them selves the r e spect of the W llco grid Iron league for the great comeback after last week’ s frightful lo ss. It was a Red and Black w ar rior named Schneider who sup plied the initial punch to San dy’ s return to football em in ence but, before the cool and cloudy evening was o v e r, Don Schneider had ample company in the hallowed ranks o f P io neer heroes. Brent Peterson, Jim M artin, and Jim Sliger made glowing contributions to the Pioneers* rushing power and the Red and Black defenders, mere cream puffs against Reynolds only s e v en days e a rlie r, guarded their side of the arena as though gold was planted under each blade of the clipped turf. And in dishing out lavish praise for Sandy’s s u c c e s s , coach Ken Brown and his cap able staff can’ t be neglected or overlooked. In a mere week, under their wise direction, the Pioneers were transformed from a men tally bruised and beaten outfit into a hopped up arm y of dedi cated sold iers. The E a g le s, seeking their second conquest in as many outings and trying to avenge last year’ s upset by the F ro n tiers men, had no answer for such dedication. The Pioneers were so much the best that they overpowered the easterners 2 to 1 on the ground and while s till being a little generous pass defense always managed to halt the E a g le advances whenever the goal line was in Jeopardy o f being crossed. A no score count stood through the first quarter but early in the second period the Pioneers struck. They opened their scoring charge on their own 23 and in a dozen rams at the blue- g shlrted wall facing th e m ,c ra sh ed and slashed to the Wy’ east one. Peterson, Slige r and Schnei der all had a hand in the a s sau lt, but mostly it was Sneed, who was the Red and Black bread and butter p o w er-h o u se , lugging the leather on half of the 12 ca rrie s . He was such a key cog in the smashing drive that when the Birds lined up to repel the advance they all had their J G M E f ll r i 1 flL U E S ! ! M artin, although noting the concentration, s till gave It to Schneider, who bulled over b e hind some fine blocking by the Pioneer offensive line. Late in third period the Red and Black men were given an other scoring opportunity when Tom Scales interescepted a Wy’ east pass on his 49. The Pioneers capitalized on the Eagle miscue as Peterson, S li ger and Schneider hammered downfield to the Eagle 10. From there M artin on a halfback flare p a s s , fired a perfect strike to S lig e r , who went In untouched. S lig e r was so jubilant after stepping across the goal line he slammed the ball to turf, a’ la T V , and, if there had been end-zone bleachers at Wy’east odds are that M r . Slige r would have found the bleachers with a tremendous toss or posssibly a might boot such as seen two weeks ago in the G e o rgia -T e n nessee tu ssle.
