B EG IN N IN G PHOTOGRAPHY (C A M E R A )
Taught by George T. Carver, photo-joumalist and teacher
of photography The course introduces to beginners and
amateurs the techniques o f photography and attempts to
develop in each student a personal visual philosophy - a
"way of seeing” in the basic visual language of color, shape
and relationship o f form and content. Techniques include
instruction in basic photographic theory, cameras, lenses,
films, filters, indoor and outdoor lighting and darkroom
procedures. Opportunities for advanced students in dark

Tole Painting is a course designed to give students instruc
tion in techniques and application o f basic principles
involved in producing patterns and designs on metalware
using brush painting procedures. The instructor, Mrs.
Valeria Smilowski, has had extensive background in tole
painting technique.

LANDSCAPING
This course is designed for the beginner in landscaping and
will deal p rim a r ily with residential landscaping. There
fore, it will be ol particular interest to the homeowner.
The fundamentals of landscaping will be presented as they
apply in a practical way to the average homeowner’s land
scape needs. Instruction in the basic principles o f land
scape plant material compatible to our particular area will

A U T O M O T IV E FOR WOMEN
A course for car owners who wish to learn how to
operate and maintain their cars more efficiently. Learn in
detail when and what to service or have serviced as the
need arises, and what to look for when purchasing a used
car. Topics include When and how to change oil. lubri
cation servicing, use o f auxiliary equipment including tire
jacks, tire chains, and spare tire mounting; air and oil
filters' functions and when to change filters.

BASIC SCUBA
A course designed to explore both the theoretical and
practical applications of underwater instruction. Units of
the course include identification of equipment and its
r usage, while lecture units will include basic theory

ysics, Physiology and Marine Biology. Students may
elect to take qualifying exams for a certificate issued by
the National Association o f Underwater Instruction upon
successful completion of the course.This certificate is recog
nized internationally and enables graduates to purchase
self-contained underwater equipment anywhere The last
three hours of the course is an optional section open to
those students desiring individual checkouts in open water.
This session will be held at Hood’s Canal north of Olym
pia, Wash. Limited to f in t 18 registered. Cost: $30.00
- includes equipment and pool rental fees, and tuition.

Folk Guitar classes will stress chording and fingering
techniques for beginners who are primarily interested in
accompanying group singing or soloists. Guitars needing
electrical amplification may not be used with this tech
nique. Class enrollment is limited to the f in t 20 students
who have paid their tuition.

terns and strumming techniques. A variety o f styles will

Persons desiring basic fundamentals o f group vocal in
struction may acquire many useful guidelines for the
conducting o f church choirs, song leading for recreational

French I is a course for students who have had no
formal contact with the French language. A conversa
tional approach to the study o f the language it stressed
with some reliance on grammar analysis. This course may
be used as a supplement to other college level French

ability to provide for necessities o f living within a French

HOMEMAKING
BASIC BISHOP SEWING
Fundamental construction techniques are tavght through
the construction of an apron, blouse, skirt, and simple
dress, all o f cotton fabric. Instruction in basic sewing
techniques includes the preparation of fabric, simple
measurements and alterations, zipper application, hems,
collars, and belts. This course is a prerequisite for all
other Bishop Courses.

In this course a Basic Pattern it constructed to meet the

This course features one of the “California Methods” ,
which employ different techniques than other methods,
making the course beneficial even to those who have had
a cake decorating course. Each student will decorate 8
beautiful cake designs. The course is primarily intended
for homemakers' benefit and technical background it not
required.

Interior Design Is a course designed to enable homemakers
to achieve proficiency in color discrimination at it applies
to fabrics, furniture, paint, and floor coverings, and to

good taste and harmony o f design in all household areas.
