Do you ever get up in the
morning in a dolorous mood?
“Sort of” a “What’s the use?’’
feeling? It’s rainy and every
thing seems drab and oh, so
dull. Then perhaps, later some
thing hapjiens that changes the
picture entirely. It reminds me
of a poem that my dear friend,
Nina Malar wrote. Here it is,
UNSEEN
A rosebud peeped through my
window
A bud with its petals of gold;
But worry and I were in
Combat,
Unseen, did its beauty unfold;
For a veil, so dense and so
dismal
Enshrouds us when worry holds
sway;
But oh, the grandeur and
fragrance
When we’ve riven that veil
away.

Well, a rose bud didn’t lift
my spirits, but a letter from
an English pen pal of mine did.
For several years I have been
sharing her joys and sorrows
via air mail.
Joys, when her gardener
husband won the cup year after
year for the best garden in his
section of Yorkshire,
Sorrows at the loss of two
grandchildren and the ill health
of her daughter.
But in this letter she was
bubbling over with happiness.
Her daughter and her husband
had taken a nine month old baby
boy for adoption.
True, the poor little fellow-
had been sadly neglected and
weighed only 13 pounds in his
clothes. He had never been in
a bath and was terrified at first
of the water in the tub but at
her writing had learned to love
it; had never been in a bed,
had never had a pram but the
doctor said he was healthy al
though very undernourished but
with regular feedings supple
mented with iron medicine, has
gained one and a quarter pounds
in a ' eek.
As soon as he is a little
fatter, a picture will be sent
me. How wonderful it is to take
a little mite like that and give
him a good home. They will
all love him just as much as
though he was their own flesh
and blood.
Then in the same mail, I
received a form letter from a
high class publication which
amused me greatly. They do

what they call “Profile match
ing’’ and according to this
matching, 1 have an imported
car. I at once looked out my
front window but no imported
car. They were all plainAmer-
ican ones and anyway they all
belonged to the neighbors.
I am supposed to have tape
recorder. (All I have is a little
record player and haven’t
bought any records since 1 re
tired from teaching and then
all I bought was Sousa’s March
es and Hokey Pokey).
As for books, much as I
love them I can’t afford to buy
them but get them from the
Sandy Library. They say I have
taken a tnp to a foreign land
-- another blank; and last, but
not least, my favorite whiskey
is bourbon. It seems to me that
once, just once, in an egg nog
I had a whisper of bourbon but
as far as I’m concerned I
wouldn’t know bourbon from
“moonshine.’’
That publication admitted
there is a margin for error in
“profile matching.’’ I believe
that is rather an understate
ment. Well, anything to adver
tise and this science gets wilder
every year. In the good old days
we did have a certain amount
of it. How many remember the
old medicine shows? Therewas
one called “The Kickapoo”,
full of sound and wild promises
of health for man and beast.
It was such fun to go to them.
When I was a little girl a
neighbor, Dave Butler, used his
mother’s
beautiful,
black,
shiny, abundant hair for his
nefarious advertising. From
some unknown ingredients he
mixed tubs full of supposed hair
tonic.
On each bottle was a picture
of his mother smiling under
her beautiful hair which was
all due to the marvelous hair
tonic.
Mr. Butler made about 99%
profit on each bottle and he sold
plenty but not to folks that knew
him. They were on to his tricks
and wild claims.
When we first talked of mov
ing to Oregon and Dad, after
reading literature extolling the
marvels of the west, told how
it was possible to walk dry
shai across rivers on the backs
of fish, our minister shook his
head sadly and remarked.“Mr.
Averill, I fear you have been
living too near Dave Butler.’’
