The loss was the first in the last four games for the Pioneers. It stoppei a three- game winning streak and left them in sixth place, th H'e games behind pacesetting Parkrose, while the Crusaders ran their record 4-2 in league and 9-2 overall. The Crusaders, were led by Kevin Kelly, who had 22 points, and never trailed. They led as much as 13-1, and 18-2 in the first quarter. Chris Turner had 14 for the winners while Saidy again was led by Ron Verdoorn with 16 points. Lee Poppenhagen also helped the Pioneer cause with 11 points. The Raiders then went with out a basket until Byron Brooks sank a jump shot at the halftime horn. Hit«*, with 5:35 left in the game, cut the OC margin to 40-38. The two teams trailed baskets then Oregon City reel ed off nine straight points, sev en by Uding to seemingly put th«> game out of reach (49-40) with only 2:38 to go. But the Pioneers stole the ball fi>ur straight times for three easy lay-ins one by Brent Peterson, the other two by Fussell; are! a tip-in by Peterson, on an er rant Fussell gift, toss tocutthe margin tc 49-48 with 32 seconds left. Yet the ftm had only begun! Sandy’s Jim Martin made a diving swipe at Byron Brooks as the Raiders worked through a frantic Pioneer press, at 28 seconds these two took over as the main event battlers. In order: (1) Martin, fouled Brooks, busting him from tsehind after the latter had passed off. (2) Brooks whirled around and popped Martin with a straight right. (3) Martin retaliated in kind. (4) Both benches emptied and the officials, labor«?d to break up the skirmish. The combined efforts suc ceeded and the damage was assessed. It went this ways Martin ami Brooks were eject- ed and Brooks* sub was award ed two foul shots on the flag rant foul. Before all ramifications were explained there were g«xxi licks launched -- maybe even some landed -- and several ram bunctious wrestling holds at tempted. The action was still not over as the OC sub promptly missed both free throws, Hite garner ing the rebound gave to Peter son, who drove to his favorite corner, only to lose the ball out-of-bounds. Brent,seeming ly not too happy about the incident a few seconds earlier, literally picked up OC’s little Steve Berends and threw him Bull Run Students Visit Boring School Boys and girls of Bull Run school visited Boring elemen tary school Friday. They were warmly welcomed and enjoyed the chance to play in a splendid gymnasium. They found them selves badly routed however in basketball and volleyball. But If you read the sports pages, you’ll see that the Port- laid Community College Pan thers took an 62-65 decision over the Mt. Hood Saints Tues day night at Parkrose. School officials explain that the team is made up ofstudents in a physical education class who banded together and enter ed a church league. Uniforms, they say, are old Parkrose high outfits, donated no charge. The Saints had a 35-34 le.id over Portland at intermission Tuesday but fell behind in the second half. Gerald Greenwood of Portland was high with 26 points. The summary: PORTLAND COMMUNITY SANDY FRESHMEN 48, OREGON CITY 50 Randy Uding sank a field goal and a free throw in the last 66 seconds Thursday night to lead Oregon City to a 50-48 upset of the previously undefeated Sandy freshmen. Sandy had won seven straight and looked like they were head ed to an unbeaten season; they were also rated the top frosh team in die Wilco league. The Raiders led throughout the game except for a 2-0 Sandy lead in the first 15 seconds erf Play. The 6’ 7” Uding led OC, rated No. 1 among TYV fresh man teams, with 27 points. Rich Sears chipped in 10. Mike Hite had 15 and Tom Fusselhad 12 to combine for 27 of Sandy's 48 points. At halftime OC led 25-23, t&e Opeteta to the floor, which resulted in two free throws, which were also both missed, but big Uding took the rebouiii away from Pe took die rebound away from Peterson and Hite and was foul ed giving oC another chance to ice it with 10 seconds left. Uding sank his first of two. So it was 50-48 with Sandy racing «town th«> court. Leon Verdoorn flipped the ball to Hite, whose 22 foot desperation shot at the horn was in and out.
