The Great Society
There is no question but that
changes are coming in the Great So
ciety.
It doesn't seem likely that any
programs will be eliminated; instead.
Congress just may not go along with
appropriations. The State Dept., for
instance, just doesn't know what to
expect relative foreign aid (a pro
gram. incidentally, which we think
is much misunderstood).
Republicans won't be in control, of
course, but they will be in a position
where their leadership will be tested.
A cabbie put it pretty well:
"If the Republicans do anything at
all in the next couple of years, if they
come up with any kind of a candi
date at all. LBJ could be in real
trouble.”
We hope the Republicans come up
with Gov. Romney or Gov. Rockefel
ler in 1968; we think Richard Nixon
would be duck-soup for the Demo
crats.
The Democrats, of course, have
LBJ, but don't discount Bobby Ken
nedy . . . even in 1968. There are
doubts about his abilities, about his
personal qualities of leadership. But
he is a tremendous vote-getter. Bar
ling an LBJ illness. Hubert Hum
phrey seems to be sidetracked.
There is a strong undercurrent of
distrust when it comes to Viet-Nam.
Many people feel we re not getting
the full story; many people feel the
administration will do almost any
thing to keep it off the ballot, so to
speak, in 1968.
Government economists are sharp
ly divided over the need and advisa
bility of a tax increase. Some feel it
is needed to put a brake on inflation.
Others feel it would not only put a
brake on inflation, but on the whole
economy and plunge us over the cliff
into a full-scale recession. There is
even a rumor that LBJ will call a
post-( hristinas special session to get
something through while the old
Congress still is in office. This we
doubt; it would be terrible politics,
