In our corner of Oregon we
have 21 spicie* that qualify as
deciduous trees that are plenti­
ful enough to attract our atten­
tion. There are a few others
diat
are
very uncommon.
Twelve genera are represented
by these 21 species, and be-
cause id certaln similarities,
Otese 12 genera can be treated
in pair*.
K<>, In ••ffect, you can make
of 21 casual acquaintances, 21
goal friends by getting to know
them better.
The alder« and maples are
both hardwools, and at least
one local species of each at­
tains great size. Both are ex­
tremely useful as furniture
woods, Ihe major specie* In
each 1« often used as shade
trees, a* when grown alone
they branch out and reach large
diameters of spread.
'¡he alders are the most nu­
merous <rf Oregon’s hardwools,
and the largest of them, the red
alder (alnus rubra), I* quite
widespread in distribution.
The name, red alder, Is de-
rived from the red stain eman­
ating from the bark when cut.
The wood, too, when finished
into fine furniture takes on a
warm, reddish tan cast.
There is a pure stand of red
alder comprising several arces
just above and across the river
from Cedar Creek which start*
at the river'« edge, climbs the
steep canyon slope and extends
several hundred feet back into
the flat lard above.
In this flat you see ranked
the gray white boles <4 thou­
sands of medium age alders,
self-pruned of all the lower
limbs, each bole carrying the

supressed
the
undergrowth, It has always
seemed to me on a hot day that
It Is always cooler under alders
than under any other shade tree.
The
white
alder
(alnus
rhombifolia) has brown bark to
distinguish it from Its larger
brother.
Too, it is found
mostly higher than the red
alder. The leaf edge of the
white is very finely toothed,
while that of the red Is lobed,
each small lobe centering on
a leaf vein.
The other two alders are
very similar in that they are

The leaf 1* often 10 Inches
or more In diameter and al­
ways five lobed. The three cen­
ter lobes are iobed again to
three points. The leaf stem
is quite long as are the seed
clusters which hang like bunch­
es of grapes.
In autumn the leaves turn a
brilliant gold. This current
autumn was ideal for color and
the sun-spangled gold erf the
big leaf maple was a major
spot of beauty In the October
scene,
Oregon’s other two maples
are small trees. The vine ma­
ples (acer circlnnatum) has
very round five pointed leaves.
The pointed lobes are cut much
shallower than the big leaf ma­
ple. Ihe trunk is often a vivid
tf»en invinti*.
The terminal twigs, however,
may be quite red. The fall dis­
play of color of the vine maple
Is unrivaled in our area, even
by the dogwoods. Brilliant reds,
tending to scarlet on some trees
and to crimson on others march
across mountain sides
like
British regiments of colonial
days, interspersed with oranges
and flames.
A vine maple hillside, ablaze
with life and hue, contrasts
sharply' with autumn’s bright
blue weather.
The Rocky Mountain or dwarf
maple (acer glabrum) has the
classical maple leaf shape de­
picted on Canada’s penny and
flags. Twenty feet is the maxi­
mum helghth of this tree which
always grows with all the
branches pointed up. The other
two maples can be found any­
where west of the Cascade
summits, but the dwarf maple
is usually found only In the
higher parts of this range.
So far we have covered but
two of our twelve genera of
Important deciduous trees in
our area. Next week the other
eight genera will be discussed.
Man is considered the cul­
mination of the animal world
and trees are the culmination
of the plant world. Like all
plants, they become more real
and important as we acquire
more knowledge of them. Each
species could occupy a column
in Itself, but here, only the
salient points to help Identify
or discriminate between them
are noted. After you can identify
it, it is much more gratifying
to discover other details about
a tree and its character and
habits for oneself.
I hope this Is the kind at
article those of you that have
asked me for something on
trees had In mind. Mine are
the observations of an ama­
teur botanist, not a trained
silviculturist, so I hope you
will forgive some of the sketchy
descriptions or lack of pinpoint
accuracy.
A rummage sale will be held
in the Shndy Women’s club hall
on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 18
and 19. Hours of the sale will
be from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. on
Friday and from 9 a.m. until 5
>p.m. on Saturday.

by the Mt. Hood Women’s Bowl­
ing Club as part of their pro­
gram to raise funds to send a
local bowling team to the nation­
al tournament

are most commonly found above
3000 feet elevation.
The Sitka aider (alnus sinu-
ata) which haa a finely tixrthed
leaf edge (to the point of being
feather edged) may be found
anywhere from the Cascade
summit west to the coast.
The mountain aider (alnus
tenuifolla) has a double trothed
leaf edge. Thia edge is quite
coarse compared to the Sitka
and is the major criteria tor
determination <f the tree at
hand.
Mountain alders are
look»«! for on the eastern slopes
erf the Cascades.
All the alder« shed their
leaves while they are still
green. They oftengrow Inthick-
ets. Red alder and big leaf
maple often grow together in
mixed stands on the slopes of
our SUndy River.
You are apt to run into all
three species of native maple
on a day's ramble through the
Cascade«. The big leaf maple
(acer macrophyllum) is very
often tall with long clear boles
In a forest environment. In the
open it may seem more like
a giant shrub with multiple
trunks and branching clear to
the ground. It suckers from the
lower trunk into three like
branches which g|ve it this
