Why are our welfare rolls so lo^, our bankruptcy rates so many, our school dropout lists so high? Have heard that others are thinking in terms of a Youth Center, but haven't had time to check out the source. Let’s have some "Community Ac tion” and work together to find the solution to this med. Do you have any suggestions? Would you volunteer to help tn any way? Let’s coordinate what re sources we have and put the plan into action! Another need incur commun ity that can be met locally is assistance with reading, spell ing and other academic skills. I know of several in our com munity that have never learned to read "by sound” and find this a handicap tn obtaining employment. At the present, I am spending two hours an eve ning aiding just such a student . . . and the results make it very worthwhile. Local people know their needs, but often don’t know how to get their voice heard where action will result. Oft-times the voice of many joined together is the voice that is finally heard — I speak of a type of community action seen at Colton recently when 1200 residents of our County demanded to be heard and obtain answers to their many questions. Another ex ample is scheduled for Nov. 22 when Estacada and vicinity plan to let their voice be heard collectively at the State High way Department in &lem. I am sure their demand for highway Improvement cannot be Ignored if such demand is backed by hundreds at individually-writ ten letters, and "the entire town” attends at the Capitol in person! . . . Watch for the reaction in Salem — it un doubtedly will bring action. But how does this apply to Sandy? Many here have voiced the opinion that Sarriy needs something for the youth . . . they are driving around the streets with nothing to do . . . the swimming pool will help the situation some . . . but will It be enough? You would be amazed how many people have made the com ment "Sandy needs a Youth Center.” A Parole officer I talked to recently said he felt it would solve many Juvenile problems in the area. Under the Community Action program, I have gathered information for a youth center: I know of 84 local teenagers who mention the same need and will volun teer to help. They feel a youth center would draw in thedrop- out students or older teenagers not now In school, and give them something constructive to do. I know parents who will volunteer as counsellors; oth ers who have volunteered to tu tor slow students; other older teenagers who have taken the wrong road, and think they can now keep someone else from going the way they did. Som< parents have volunteered b teach their own hobby or skill: (If the teenagers want to learn): dancing, square dancing, draw ing, music, woodwork, etc. It DRUG AND DEPARTMENT STORE ORE-IDA R«g INSTANT Nov. 17, 18, 19 THURS., FRI., SAT.
