Hood Com munity College plans an immediate program of full-scale athletics. This just plain isn’t so. Some remarks by board members, taken out of context, are being widely interpreted as forecasting a big sports program. Actually, the college intends noth ing but the normal and required physi cal education courses. Plans for a track, for instance, mean only a P.E. track . . . not a competitive track. College President Dr. Earl Klap- stein quite properly has said that physical education is absolutely essen tial to student needs. But he empha sized that this does not mean com- petitive sports . . . football, for in stance. Once the college is opened, it ulti mately may field a basketball team and perhaps a few individual entrants in track. But no community college in Oregon—excepting Treasure Valley in Ontario—has a sports program and, once again, nothing of the sort is planned here. Rep. Ross .Morgan has said that the state legislature wil) not provide funds for competitive athletics, in fact has "stoutly resisted" such ef forts. He will find no argument from those in charge of .Mt. Hood. Attempts to read anything else into their re cent discussions of physical educa tion are just plain inaccurate.
