Good Conservation Means Hay in Barn

from conservation
farming.

and his mother
Grace, operate a dairy tarm two
miles
north of Cherryville
Junction. This is off Hiway
26 towards Mt. Hood.
In 1961 they realised
the
production
from
their 35
cleared acres was too skimpy.
They knew there must be a
way to up hay yields.
Hearing about the North Clac
kamas Soil and Water Con-
servatlon
District, they re
quested assistance from
the
Board of Supervisors. A soil
survey was requested to de
termine if they could grow im
proved grasses and legumes.
Technicians from the Soil
Conservation
Service were
asked by the supervisors to
assist the Tueschers.
They
first made a detail soli survey
of the farm.
The soil found is called Mar
mot, silt loam. This is a very
deep, well drained soil on high
terraces. Very little was known

about this soil. It looked good,
rainfall was
high, there was
a known frost hazard, and the
acidity had to be checked.
Tuescher and the technician
agreed they would try improved
varieties
grasses
and
legumes considered promising.
A trial planting of DuPuits
alfalfa and La tar orchargrass
was
seeded on three acres,
