She dashed next door to the offices of Dr. Roy Carothers and Dr. Robert Schouten and phoned the local fire dept. Fire Chief Lyle Seamon commented later that it was most likely a good thing that she did not try to enter the building as almost anything could have happened once out side oxygen reached the smold ering fire. The heat in the basement level was so intense that plastic hangers were melt ed up. From all indications, Sea mon stated, the trouble started sometime in the night from a short in the furnance junction box. Two holes were found in the junction box cover which appeared to have been caused from arcing. Right below the furnance were stored numer ous layaway and will call cloth ing items. The smoldering had spread from here throughout the basement area for a con siderable period of time be fore being discovered. By the time it was found the available oxygen in the building had been spent surmised Seamon. Besides layaway and will call items, the basement was used for general storage, alteration and pressing, and a complete line of exclusive cocktail dress es were kept here. Mrs. Steffi commented that a lot of things had already been put away by numerous store customers for the Christmas and holiday season. These items were com pletely destroyed by the fire. The store building is owned by Dr. Roy Carothers and leas ed by Mrs. Steffi for her ladies clothing shop. He is away on a trip to the Orient and was not available for comment. How ever, it was learned that the building is insured through a Portland insurance firm. The store’s owner remarked OUR OIL ALWAV5 STANDS THE TEST, BELIEVE US.
