Sandy Battles
Improved Foxes
Sandy Is on the road again
this Frldsy night as they take-
on an improved Silverton teem.
The seventh league encounter
for both squads, it will begin
at 8 p.m. on the Silver Foxes
home turf.
Operating from a straight
T-formation, the Silver Foxes
are probably the most Improv
ed team in the league as well
as the most under - rated elev
en. Comprised predominantly
of seniors (8 of 11 starters)
they will be fielding a big line
that averages around the 200
pound figure.
In the backfield their "big
guns’’ are a passing quarter
back named Bret Nelson and
high scoring Miles Brendan who
fills a halfback slot. Brendan
is the number five prep scorer
in the state this season. With
the passing of Nelson the Sil
verton squad will definitely pose
a dangerous threat to the Pio
neers who have shown a weak
ness in their pass defensive
game.
Silverton played the league
leaders, Reynolds, last week
and had them hanging on to the
ropes it was reported. Although
they lost the contest 20-13 they
punched
their
13 counters
across tn the final quarter while
stymlng the Lancers offensive
thrust. The Sliver Foxes hsv»a
3-3 record while the Pioneers
are 2-4 in Wilco play.
Coach Ken Brown's charges'
are all healthy he said and
will be out to pull an upset this
week. Lineups for the contest
will be about the same as in
previous games.
The Pioneers are smarting
from a 20-6 defeat at the hands
of Wy*east last Friday. It was
a contest which saw the Sandy
offense begin to jell for the
first time this season.

Pioneer JV's Whitewash
Wy'east Squad 25-0 Here
Scoring in three of the four
quarters of play the Sandy JV’s
racked up a 25-0 victory over
the Junior Varsity eleven from
Wy*east in a contest played in
Sandy on Wednesday, Oct. 13.
For the first time this sea
son reported JV Coach Bob
BeLsell his junior varsity grid-
iers offense jelled. He expres
sed pleasure in the manner in
which they rolled up the tallies
In the recent encounter.
The
Pioneer JV’s opened
their scoring attack In the very
first quarter as Delbert Coff
man drove Into the end zone
from the four yard stripe to put
his
teammates ahead 6-0.
Steve Shultz scored the extra
point and Bandy- moved into a
7-0 lead. Biggest gain of the
downfield march was supplied
by Don Hutson who got away
for a 30 yard gain.
It was Coffman again who
shook lose from the Wy’east
JV defense and rambled three
yards into paydirt. Just a short
time before this Shultz had
intercepted a Wy'east pass on
their 35 yard line and raced
the ball to the 10 before being
stopped. This tally came In the
second quarter of play. The PAT
attempt failed.
Coffman took another hand
off in the third period to cap a
scoring drive. He punched the
ball over the goal line from
the one. The conversion attempt
was not good and Sandy lead
stood at 19-0.
During the final quarter of
action Coach Beiseli sent In
his second string who showed
up
well.
A reverse play
placed the pigskin In the arms
of Ron Nelson who caught the
Wy*east defense unaware. He
raced 45 yards downfield to
score the fourth TD for the lo
cals. Again the extra point play
was not good anti the final
count was 25-0.
The Sandy JV squad travels
to Parkrose today (Thursday)
for action against a Parkrose
JV unit.
