One way to meet this problem is to establish "work and learn" college scholarship program where students may work during the summer months with the company sponsoring the scholarship, Van Vliet noted. An article in the August Is sue of Forest Industries maga zine and co-authored by Van Vliet and Bill Paxson of the Willamette Valley Lumber Co., Dallas, revealed that most forest products companies are failing to attract competent management personnel in com petition with other major Indus - tries. The modern company today must communicate its future plans as well as its current triumphs, the authors noted. Communications should not only be extended to the elementary, Junior high and senior high school student, but also to the type of college student an em ployer wants to hire. The "work and learn" plan has been tried successfully by the Willamette Valley Lumber Co. with the main objective of perpetuating good management. Students are required to be en rolled In one of the state uni versities or colleges and ma joring in forest products or wood science, forest engin eering, forest management,en gineering, or business admin istration.
