î THE SANDY (Or..) POST Thur»., Mar 4, 1965 (Sec. 2) Glenfair Beats Mountaineers FISHERMEN'S GUIDE Sandy lost its second league game Friday, March 5, when Glenfair squeeked out with a one point margin for a 31 to 30 victory. Sandy led the first quarter, but halftime found the scored tied 12 to 12. Sandy led In the third quarter by four points most of the time, but in the fourth quarter Glenfair overcame this lead and man aged the win from the free throw line. The second defeat causes Sandy to share first place hon- ors in league standing with Fre- mont, who beat the Mountain- eers the week before. The team goes to Orient tomorrow for the final game of the season. by Mel Weseman It is weather like we’ve had during the last of February that causes the Black Bear to leave his den and investigate the warming countryside. For, unlike many of the ani mals that do hibernate, the black bear doesn’t enter into a true hibernation, but rather a deep sleep. He can be easily aroused without too much trouble, as with mild weather, or someone snooping too close to his den. These small - sized black bears are the species that live here on the mountain. Actually, they can be found in nearly all parts of the United States. Not aggressive in nature, the small bear would rather run than fight, and is not as feroci ous as people generally believe. It is because of his “running” ability that the bear has been able to survive so well with the ever-increasing population. His feeding habits are large ly nocturnal, (especially when it c o m e s to raiding garbage cans!) and the sight of man, or even the smell, will cause him to run. It is only on rare oc casions that a black bear will attack a man, and that time might be a sow protecting her cubs, or a wounded bear. I’ve read that black bears are hard to find without dogs, and that very well’may be true when you are hunting them. But coming across them by pure chance seems to happen quite often. Last summer when I was fishing up on Salmon river I had to climb out of a steep canyon. It was a hand over hand COTTRELL DOINGS By Mr». H. A.
