THE SANDY (Ore.) POST Thur»., Dec. 31, 1964 (Sec. 1)
I am more or less happy when
being praised; not very uncom
fortable when being abused; but
I have moments of uneasiness
when being explained. — Arthur

Many people have been left
homeless and some have even
lost their land. I had a close
call at my place, and consider
it very fortunate that it is now
only a matter of high water
keeping me and my family away
from our home. The lights are
on, and I hope the water will
be on before very long. But,
though we may be without water,
just being home, safe and
sound, will make a very wond
erful beginning for the New
Year.

Wemme, Dec. 23, PM: Early
this morning the worst of the
flood waters roared through
river channels already deepen
ed and changed by the rushing
torrents. There is untold dis-
truction being wrought up
and down the Sandy, Salmon,
Zig Zag rivers, to mention
only a few.
Much of it is unbelievable.
Houses being cut away from the
river banks and floating away,
bridges washed out, and giant
log jams blocking water ways.
Stories told by others seemed
hard to believe, but seeing it
with my own eyes was even
harder. I have never seen rlv -
ers so high, or muddy, or
swift, as I did this morning,
or as much evidence of the
terrific power that the turbu-
lent, roaring water was exert-
ing against every seemingly
immobile object in its path. I
have never seen it before be-
cause the mountain has never
had a flood like this one.
My family, wife, 2 boys and
infant daughter, left home Tues
day morning when the river rap
idly rose in front of the house,
blocking their exit by car. We
have all been very gratefully
accepting the warm hospitality
of Audie and Florence Llon-
berger, a close neighbor In
Welches. We watched the water
come to within one-quarter of
an inch of the back door; a
fact discovered only after the
water had receded enough to
wade across to the house.
Many, many extra hours of
hard, cold, wet work have been
put in by the PGE work crews.
trying to keep the electricity
on; and by the road crews,
clearing roads and helping
stranded people. Everything In
their power is being done to
recover from the flood damage.
These people and all the oth-
ers helping in this disaster de-
serve a great big thank you
