Thur»., Dec. 17, 1964 (Sec. 2) HOAwaweo BUSTLING BORING By MBS. JOHN OLDS MO 5 6929 BORING-- All Will Rogers knew was what he read in the newspapers, he said. All we know is what we see in this general area. (And to the teenager who asks, “Who was Will Rogers?’’ I’ll tell you when you have a week to listen.) Last week we saw “The Man Who Came to Dinner” junior class play at Sandy Union high school. The lines were funny and fast--many too fast to catch. Christ Hartman did a dandy job as Sheridan Whiteside, and even a few decades after this show was on Broadway, it played well. Teachers Dennis Crow and Carlyle Gaye directed the opus, shaped up in a few weeks. We understood that many of thé cast had never heard of celebrities they met in their lines: Ethel Waters, Talulah Bankhead, Norma Shearer. How soon we feel dated! We mentioned some of the Boring juniors in the play last week--so now we must give credit to Ellen Kaufman, who was splendid as Professor Metz, and Jim Boring, up to the mark in both lights and sound control. The next night, we heard the Pionaires under direction of Tom Lewis at the Boring Tea cher association meeting. This is Sandy High’s madrigal group -- harking back to the Middle Ages when people sat around reading music for enter tainment much as we sit around the boob tube these days. Only Mr. Lewis courteously referred to it as the TV. The singers were superb, at tested to by singers’ singer, Mrs. Helen Denney. Par ticipating were Pat Byrd, Kay Markham, Phyllis Comer, Hilde Olds, Larry Verdoorn, Tim Gillespie, Jim Benshoof, Leann Eklund, Margaret Boothby, Ro- berta Matheson, Linda Wade, Mike Rommel, Lloyd Hanne- berg, David Whitlock, Lee Ebly, Gary Fox, Larry Lauderback, Phil Hayes, Pat Barnett. Principal Norval Naas announced that Wednesday, Dec. 23, is Boring elementary school's Christmas program date. School will be out the after noon of Dec. 24 and will resume Jan. 4. Karen Moon played an organ solo at the PTA meeting and Mrs. A. B. Comer presided. Winnie Lekberg observed her 10th birthday Monday. Order N LYNDEN NORBEST OR SWIFT'S The William Coopers wel comed a baby boy into the family circle last week. We talked to three children in the family, and we have just that many versions of when it was- but it was a boy! Combined program o f the Boring Community Methodist church Sunday School and church choir will be the even ing of Sunday, Dec. 20. Every one is welcome. Rev. Paul Ac kerman will preach at the morn ing service. Grace Lane was hostess to the Boring Ladies’ Aid group last week in her home. Arno Ritter was elected board member of Fire Pro tection District #59, by a landslide, we understand. Vol unteer firemen are collecting canned foods, staples, and toys for distribution to needy fam ilies this Christmas season, according to Fire Marshal Ollie Peterson. This is an annua] project. Contributions are also appreciated, because the fire men often make up any lacks by donations from their own pockets — and they expand much time and effort as it is. Teacher Ray Gran and his family are in their new home now, but they have countless projects ahead until things are just the way they want them. Sandy high music department will present its combined Christmas program Thursday evening in the school cafetor- ium. The things that delight us are the things others often miss. Sunday, we were seeing a friend off at the airport when a young thing, brimmed fur hat clear to the tip of her nose, checked her ticket with the ubiquitous steward who murmured in a solicitous voice, “Would you like a seeing-eye dog?” Competitive Prices Fresh TURKEYS T-Bone Q Qn Steak O jrib IT’S ZIMS MAXWELL HOUSE INSTANT COFFEE Davidson's Hard Mix SATURDAY ONLY!
