Thursday, Aug. n, i9«4 (Sec. 1) The Sandy (Ore.) Post By jessie By NELL HOWE Hood-Land Reporter 279 ■ 6149 A few years ago a Tacoma paper ran a series of articles on "The Meanest Man In Town’’ One candidate for the title gave a bllndman, who ran a newstand, a dollar bill and demanded change for a five, another that I remember, gave newsboys counterfeit dollars when purchasing papers--but now little Rusty Pierce of Route 2 tells of one that tops them all. It seems that he was playing with his dog Shep in their yard when a car came by--The driver slackened speed as he neared the dog and child, lowered his window and shot at the dog, wounding him but luckily Shep survived. How easily it could have been Rusty that was shot in place of his dog. What manner of man could this be that would shoot at a dog playing with his small owner? I think that his name should hang high on the "Meanest Man” ros ter. In fact they lived in one corner of a dear, old pioneer’s pasture. Every year when the hay was In the old gentleman would say "Well, must go down and cut the weeds” and that’s just what he did but the trusting old soul let them lay where they fell, so next year there was a fresh crop. As long as he lived the plants were kept in check and in the pasture but after his passing no attention was paid to them as they were considered unimportant Now the pesky things are trying to take the country and are making a good success of It. Talk about a "yellow peril”. Each plant has dozens of flowers on one stem. for their cattle. It does not seem to be reflected in our meat mar kets. Lyle Olson of Calif, has been visiting his sister, Mrs. Kenneth Flath of Route 2. Rinnen* Says By LILLIAN Every flower has a million seeds. Every seed has an itching hoof as it were and a burning desire to see what kind of home the next pasture or field would make. Once there as the seeds are especially equipped for air travel, they settle down, have millions of descendants who have the same desire to travel. We fight them with spray in the spring when the plants are small. This time of year there are always plants who hide from the spring’s attack and are now boldly flaunting their yellow crowns. We hire a crew of boys to dig them, cut off their tops and imprison them in sacks. Believe It or not, at least fifty sacks were filled this year. We really try to keep them In check but It is pretty exaspera ting to see them along the road., and whole fields of them on public and private lands. Not long ago we saw enough blooming near the Barton Bridge to seed acres of Clackamas Co. These scientists like a problem and a challenge. I’ll give them one. Find a use for the tansy ragwort so we in Oregon can have a cash crop that requires no effort to raise.
