(Post photo I ‘VFrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrFrrrrrrri work smarter (not harder)^ By BERNICE STRAWN OSU Extension Service Are artificial sweeteners safe for use by “normal” per sons? The labels on these pro ducts say they should be used only by people who must re strict their Intake of ordinary sweets. Virginia Weiser, nutritionist with the OSU Extension Serv ice, explains that moderate use of artificial sweeteners is safe for anyone. However, sugar is an impor tant part of the normal diet. Under the present food and drug regulation issued in 1941, sub stitution of artificial sweetener for sugar in foods for general use would constitute “adulter ation.” Miss Weiser further explain ed that in recent years, artifi cially sweetened foods are used not only by diabetics but also would-be weight losers. For this reason, the Food and Drug Administration is considering a possible revision of the clause "only by persons who must restrict their intake of ordinary sweets.” LETTERS TO GWEN Sunshine Corner By Gwen Allee Dear Gwen, I am a widow of many years and with hard work have saved a little but not enough to support myself when no longer employable. I have met a man my own age who is afraid of marriage, as he had two unfortunate ones, and I in turn had a happy one. He wants no marriage, but wish es to settle for a friendship that I am sure will not remain such. Should I try to forget this man, or what should I do? Caring-Flora Dear Caring-Flora, Run, run fast the other way. He is not caring about you really or he himself would offer marriage. He is Immature as he is trying to have the cake and icing without the responsibility, and also at your ages, he can’t be changed so do not try It. Take your disappointment now, and not heartache later. Goodluck. « * * Dear Gwen, Did you ever hear of anyone coming down with a head ache every time they had to pay a big bill? Well, I do and I finally traced the infrequent headaches to the parting with hard-saved cash. Fun ny isn’t it? Just a friend-Clara Dear Clara, It Isn’t funny. I know a lady who breaks Into an Itchy rash every time her bank account gets low and I know folks who try to be polite to a real boring situation and come down with a stiff neck, just a pain in the neck situation. Sometimes folks have the misfortune to be al lergic to one another. Dear Gwen, My wife and I have an argument we'd like your opinion on. We have five children, and though I can af ford it, I think my children can pick berries, and helppayfqr their school clothes, and my wife says I embarrass her letting our chil dren work, and what will the Jones’ think? Your ideas please. Tough Dad-Jack Dear Tough Dad-Jack, I think if all folks let their chil dren earn, and thereby learn the value of the dollar, when they grow up they will be better prepared to be a marriage partner, as well as knowing the true worth of saving for worthwhile things. As for the Jones’ perhaps they envy you for putting your foot down, and will follow suit if they have children your children’s age. Afraid I side with yqu, Dad. * * « Dear Gwen, What makes you such an opti mist, and have a Sunshine Corner? Just nosy-Helen Dear Nosy-Helen, One I have so much to be thank ful about, two hands, two eyes, two feet, and I could go on and on. And I am thankful for so many things folks forget to be grateful about-- and my column. I dearly love, because if I help ease one heartache, or help some one smile, I am more than happy. * « * Dear Gwen, Can you help me? My husband reads your column, believe it or not, and our problem is we are now in our late 30’s, and he will not carry any insurance. He says he is not leaving it for some other man to enjoy. It’ isn’t I want anything to happen to my hubby, heaven forbid, but I would like to know If I am outliving my husband, as statistics state, that I will have a little something to fall back on in case I am too old to work. What do you think. Frlghtened-Ella Dear Ella, If we Insure an Inanimate ob ject like a car against adversity, why not a live person, so that the one tie cares for above all others is protected. It seems logical to me. I have always said Insurance Is a poor man’s bank account and often his legacy. He’d be wise to talk to an insurance man. However, she cautions that if you do use them, “ moderation” is important to avoid developing a taste for highly-sweetened foods. * * * Summer hitchhikers. Garments become contamin ated with the plants' irritating oils, so It’s not safe to wear or handle them until after laund ering. * * * Can you tell a fresh egg? Mrs. Velma Seat, extension food marketing specialist at OSU, gives these clues to freshness. The white should be thick and cloudy, the yolk should stand high. Check to see if there is white rope-like material attached to the yolk. This is a sign of freshness. Are hard-cooked eggs hard to peel? The fresher the egg, the more reluctant it is to part with its shell after cooking. When you use apesticlde, check upon your safety rules. Don’t get pesticides on food, dishes or cooking utensils.
