Vol. 25 TEN PAGES Royalty Will Visit Mountain The Rose Festival Queen and her court will pass through Sandy at approximately 10:30 a.m. Sun day, June 14. The party will be comprised of the queen and her 11 princesses, a chaperon, Cecil Brown, chairman of the queen’s activities, Henry Baldridge, presi dent of the Rose Festival Asso ciation, and James Simmons, dir ector of the association. Present, also, In the glittering galaxy, will be Admiral Holmes and his escort, Max Donnelly .pres ident of the Navy League, as well as Arthur Beaumont a noted art ist who has specialized in navy scenes as a guest of the navy. Paul E. Neff, supervisor of the Mt. Hood National Forest will be present with his charming wife. Arriving at Timberline Lodge, the party will be taken by sno- cat to see the finish of the Gold en Rose slalom race, an annual event. After the race they will return to the lodge to change clothing for the Presentation Ban quet where the queen will present trophies to the winners of the Gold en Rose race. Picnic Rewards Good Bus Behavior A HARRY MOFFET Two bus drivers who appreci ate the good behavior of their riders are Harry Moffet and his wife Annie Bea. To prove it they took their respective bus- ■ .s on a short picnic on Fri day, the last day of school. Harry Moffet, driver of bus No. 10, took his forty-five riders, grades one through seven, to the North Cherryville turn around where they played games and were treated to cookies and ice cream. Two high school girls went along to help with the gan. -s and look after the younger children. Part of Hiway 26 Declared Scenic The State Scenic Area Board today announced the establishment of scenic areas covering some 260 miles on seven highways in Oregon. The new scenic areas are on sections of the Oregon Coast High way, the Willamette Highway, the Crater Lake Highway, ORE230and public roads in Crater Lake Nat ional Park, The Dalles-California Highway, the Green Springs High way, and the Mt. Hood Highway. The Board’s action bans the construction- of new billboards In these areas. Signs now existing must be removed within seven years. Signs are permitted with- In scenic areas only on the pre mises of the business or service advertised. Mt. Hood Highway: from Cedar Creek easterly five miles to a point just east of Sandy River; from the Mt. Hood National For est boundary near Rhododendron easterly 35 miles to the northern boundary of the Mt. Hood National Forest (ORE35); from this forest boundary northerly seven miles to Mt. Hood, and from Long Prairie Road northerly five miles to Pan orama Point near the city limits of Hood River. The Scenic Board refused to designate the Mt. Hood Highway sections from Sandy easterly five miles to near Cedar Creek, from Mt. Hood to Long Prairie Road, and from Panorama Point to the junction with the Columbia River Highway. Petitioners on the Mt. Hood Highway sections were the Oregon Roadside Council, the Scenic Area Board, and the Hood River County Chamber of Commerce. It will tie 1200 feet in length with 33 drag platters and 4 intermediate towers. Its pur pose is to facilitate passage of skiers to the summer ski school and to promote summer skiing. Weather permitting, the lift will be completed within a week. The work has been hampered by rain, snow, fog and almost every kind of high level storm. Ambulance Service Extended No. 24 Sandy Rural Fire District Sets City Annexation Vote Aristocrats of Dog Racing World Live in Area A few miles west of Sandy on Highway 26 live 67 aristocrats of the dog world. They are racing greyhounds owned by Mr. and Mrs. Earl Fisher who own and operate the Valley West Kennels. Louise and Earl have been in the racing dog business for many years, seperately. Now they are married and combining forces and know-how to make their dogs the best in the west. Earl has been raising and racing dogs for about 9 years; Louise for 3. The Valley West now has 67 dogs, Including 37 pups. To your reporter’s unpracticed eye, they all look like winners. In fact, the Fishers have had many winners at Fairview, the Multnomah Kennel Club track, as well as at Great Falls, Mont., and at Sanford Track in Florida. These dogs are clean, well cared for and happy. Much has been said about what happens to a rac ing dog when his racing days are Single Copy 10o generator was half way up when it sank in soft snow. Racing School Sessions Start The 8th International Summer Racing School for Skiers opened Monday, June 8, at Timberline Lodge. Past years have counted among those registered such not ables as Penny Pitou, Tom Coch ran, Sally Deaver, Les Streeter, Karl Schantz, Putzl Frankie and recent Olympic star, Jimmy Huga. The rigorous training schedule Is patterned after Olympic and FIS training camps with some up-dating introduced by the Co directors Anderl Molterer, Erich Sailer and Pepl Gromshammer. Ski sessions are held on the 10, 000 foot level of beautiful but rugged Mt. Hood where permanent snow fields provide Alpine like terrain for the instructors of the future Olympic hopefuls. The in struction Includes special atten tion to Slalom, Giant Slalom and downhill racing, with other topics such as waxing, clothing, bindings, equipment and training regimen, Manager for this year’s Racing School is C. George Mattusch, well known in the machine tool industry, and better known to the racers as "Uncle George": who donates his time and effort toward what is known as the"finest racing school for skiers in the world". Training schedule tiegins at6:00 o’clock In the morning. Following breakfast, racers are transported on the Magic Mile double chair lift to the slopes, where warm up exercises are conducted. Later, racers ride the "Sno-Cats” to the 10,000 foot level, where the first portable poma lift ever erected In North America will operate. Here, movies are taken of the racers and the films later analyzed. Cor rections in technique follow these evaluations. Phil Jonsrud has been appointed by Tom McCall, Republican can didate for Secretary of State, as chairman of the McCall campaign In the Sandy area, it was announced today. Jonsrud will be assisted by Ivan Barker, who has known McCall since he was a schoolboy In Red mond. Marie Motejl, former precinct committeewoman, has also been appointed by Howard Belton, in cumbent Republican candidate for State Tresurer, to head his cam paign locally. BPW Installs New Officers Sandy Business Professional Women met at Barts Wharf In Portland for their Installation of officers. Fifteen members were present and one guest, Dorothy Gray of Gresham. The incoming State President, Erma Anderson was installation officer for the gala event. Pro- grams, decorations and the can- dle-llght ceremony were impres- slve along with divulging to the public the Sandy High School Stu dents name Carolyn Cooke who won the BPW scholarship. She will attend College of Education at Monmouth. Sandy PBW is proud to announce that Florence Schmitz, elementary teacher at Sandy Grade School, was appointed by the State Pres. to be Citation of Merit Chairman for the year. Ardis Green, outgoing Pres., presented each one of her of- fleers and chairmanship gifts, fol- lowed wlth a short message. Also giving messages were the state Pres. and the In-Coming Pres.
