Pet er Wmgle arm urn ed that permits wtll Ite required for all trash burn ing within the Mt. Hood National Forest protective boundary. The State Forester has proclaimed that fire season is in effect, and that all fire laws are now being en forced. Buring permits cart be obtained during periods of low fire danger between 8 a.m. and " p.m. at the Zigzag Ranger Station. The sta tion will be open on weekends be ginning June 6. The Mt. Hood National Forest has converted to an aerial fire detection system this summer. Locally only Hickman Butte Look out will tie maimed this summer, primarily for radio communlca- tions and fire weather forecast- Ing. Aircraft will be used to detect forest fires, and will be making several flights daily, depending upon the fire danger. During the past five years, only 107 of 348 fires on the forest were first spotted by lookout tow- ers. The remainder of were first reported by local citizens, air- craft or Forest Service ground patrols. Converting to an aerial detec tion system will not only reduce the costs (if fire detection, but will provide better coverage, and quicker detection and verification of questionable fires. For this reason, it is particularly Important that all trash fires authorized by burning permit. Aircraft will investigate all fires that are not authorized by valid burning permits, and fire wardens will be dispatched by radio as soon as these fires are located. One of the Forest Service’s big gest jobs is to protect the forest resources for your livelihood and recreation. They ask for your assistance and cooperation this summer. Obituary Rayburn F.
