by-gone days and that Is the skunk

farm. A big one strolled by re
cently and our German Shepherd
(ever alert) treed him in our
woodshed while the mister and I
suffered. Come moring a 30-30
put and end to the skunk but not
the smell.
"Did you ever smell a worse
one ?” i asked. That was all that
was needed to recount a tale of
early days and a small boy's
mischief.
"On a fishing expedition, I got
what I wanted but it wasn’t a fish.
One spring day when I was eight
or nine, I was fishing along our
little creek as usual. I had start
ed (perhaps) a half mile above
our house and fished down. Into
the bank on one side of the creek.
Dad had dug out quite a good
sized cave where in the fall he

stored potatoes, turnips, ruta-
bagoes and any tiling else that
freezing would spoil. When spring
came the cellar was cleaned
out and the door left open to air
out.
On this day I smelled skunk
mighty strong and I figured there
was probably one in the cave.
I cautiously peeped in the open
door and, sure enough, there was
a big fellow digging in one corner.
Now I had heard a lot of argument
about skunks. Some folks said his
smell was a highly inflamable gas
and if a match was lighted any
where near him there would be
in explosion. Others said "Sure
the skunk smells awful but that
doesn’t mean he’s dynamite."
I thought, “Here’s where I find
out who is right about that smell’’
Dropping my fish pole and fish,
I first let down the swing door of
the cave; then I hurried away to
cut a long pole from a bunch
of alders. Sneaking into the wood
shed, as I knew my mother wouldn’t
approve my plan, I found part
of an old newspaper which with
a bit of string, I fastened to my
pole. Then I had to have a match
which we, children weren’t allowed
to have. Peeping into the kitchen,
I saw mother was in the adjoining
room with the younger children, so
very quietly I reached on a shelf
and got two matches in case the
first one went out.
Then I hurried back to the cave.
Lighting the paper, then lifting
the door, I pushed the stick in as
far as I could when bang the whole
room was lighted up. I let the door
down in a hurry but the smell
was simpy terrible; burned skunk
smell, burned fur. The whole com
bination made me mighty sick,
but after things quieted down a
little and I had gained my sea
legs, as it were, I went in and
finished that skunk with a club
which wasn’t hard to do as he
seemed pretty groggy. Anyway
that one wouldn’t steal any more
of our chickens.

Studebaker is a full-size car . . . but only where it counts—
inside. In the front and in the rear, it’s compact. And, the
result is that it handles like a small car, but gives you the
comfort of a large one.
You can stretch your legs out in a Studebaker. You don’t
have to crane your neck forward to keep your head from
hitting the roof. And, it’s built to accommodate six people-
three in front and three in back—in comfort.
