Thursday, April >, Internal Revenue Service Warns Refunds or credits of state and local taxes, which were claimed as a deduction on a prior year's Federal Income Tax Return, gen erally constitute taxable income and must be reported on Federal Income Tax Returns in the year received. A. G. Erickson, Director of Internal Revenue for Oregon, is sued this reminder today for Ore gon taxpayers who have questioned the treatment of Oregon refunds or credits received during the year 1963. He noted, however, that where the taxpayer claimed the standard deduction In the prior year, he is not considered to have received a Federal tax benefit from such pay ment in the prior year and need not report a subsequent refund or credit of state or local taxes paid. Form 1040A cannot be used for this purpose. Erickson pointed out that the same rule generally applies in the case of subsequent refunds or reimbursements, by insurance or otherwise, of other deductible it ems such as medical expenses, casualty losses, Interest, etc. Refunds or credits of Federal taxes are not taxable income, and need not be reported on the Fed eral tax return, but any interest received on local, state, or Fed eral refunds is taxable income. He said taxpayers who have further questions about the treat ment of refunds or credits may call their nearest Internal Rev enue Service office. International! Public Notices Enterprise Green Vegetables Brighten Meals Brighten family meals with freshly cooked green veget ables, suggests Tod Hamilton, Multnomah county extension agent. The trick will be to keep the bright green color of fresh vegetables. The green color is due to chlorophyll, a temp ra mentai coloring agent. It dis likes heat and absolutely will not tolerate acid. Acid turns green vegetables to an olive - green or bronze color. To keep the bright color in green vegetables use small amounts of boiling water -- not more than one-half inch in the bottom of the pan. Leave the cover off for the first two or three minutes of cooking of green vegetables. This allows the acids to escape in the steam. Then cover and cook to the tender but still crisp stage. Do not overcook. Remove veg etables slightly underdone. They will finish cooking while you handle them. For a delicious flavor, sea son green vegetables with but ter or margarine to which a dash of lemon juice has been added. Slick tricks with a variety of vegetables are reported in OSU's Extension leaflet PNW 45, "Choosing and Using West ern Vegetables." al 4-7395 12' SHORT log bunks. 16158 NE Glisan, AL 3-6021.
