JV, Varsity Cagers
Take League Opener
It was Sandy night again on the
home floor Tuesday, as the hot
JVs set a blistering pace with a
. 79-39 victory, and the varsity crew
i recovered from a cold first half
to record a 57-41 triumph over
Estacada.
Only three field goals were can
ned by Pioneer shooters through
out the first quarter, but Sandy
eked out a 12-9 lead at the first
stop, after having fallen behind 7-
6. The first score in the frigid
• quarter came on a free throw
2:28 Into the period.
The second quarter was even
slower, as the Pioneers resorted to
their squirrel cage, clock-eating
offense, and killed well over three
minutes. The only two-pointers in
the period were the lay-ins by
Dale Carpenter and Ron Esper-
sen, which boosted Sandy to a
6-3 edge In quarter scoring. The
18-12 half-time score was the
smallest total recorded here in
quite some time.
Sandy came alive for 23 points
in the third quarter, and opened up
a decisive 41-25 lead over the
bewildered visitors. Ilie teams
evened off at 16 points each in the
closing period, Sandy being led
by Chuck Croston’s seven, and
Carpenter’s five.
Carpenter closed out the eve
ning with 25 points. Croston and
Jon Sandstrom hit nine each, Mike
Motejl accounted for three, and
Milt Marcy, Terry Peterson, Ron
Espersen, Jack Scales, and Tom
Smith all added two.
Estacada’s attack was headed
by Howard Durand with 15.
Sandy’s scoring power seem
ed to be stymied during the first
half by the stubborn Estacada de
fense. The Pioneers have yet to
make an impressive showing
against a zone, being held to five
gMla in the first half this tune.
Ilie JV squad, setting a season
record for scoring, blitzed the nets
for more than 20 points in three of
their wide-open quarters.
Everyone played a part in the
rout, and the scoring was distrib
uted among nine players. Veteran
floor manager Gary Harrell built

’64 Jet-smuoth Luxury Chevrolet
What does it take to make a car a great high
way performer?
If the car happens to be a '64 Chevrolet,
one thing only. A highway.
You’ll find everything else already neatly-
packaged for you—on the car exactly as you
pick it off the showroom floor.
There's a choice of seven engines —all the
way up to a twin-carb high-compression
425-hp V8*—and four transmissions, includ
ing a finely honed 4-speed stick shift.*
And underlying it al! a hump-skimming
Jet-smooth ride that helps keep
the performance great even when
the highway s aren't so great.
What about special performance equip
ment? Professional driving skills? Forget
them.
Nobody has to doctor or coax or soup up
these Chevrolets to get the best out of them.
And that's really the test of a great high
way performer: Just about anyone can get a
kick out of driving one, just about anywhere,
just as it comes out of the showroom.
Next time you're out your dealer's way,
allow a few extra minutes to sample one of
these highway performers on your own. A few
are really all you'll need. That's
enough time to do a lot of driving
in a Chevrolet.
