Janz Reveals Plans
On Berry land Move
Bob Pullen of Janz Berryland
and Melvin Picking of Hood River
have purchased the Gresham Ber
ry Growers receiving station on
the western edge of Sandy. After
needed repairs and improvements
they will use the building as the
new location for Janz Berryland.
The building with its larger fa
cilities will enable them to in
crease their fruit and berry stock
and to offer more In the nursery
line. In the coming year they hope
to have on hand at least 80 va
rieties of trees and many addi
tional kinds of azaleas and rho
dodendrons.
Within the next three years they
plan to operate on this Ideal site
an "open air" drlve-in restaur
ant, serving such seasonal treats
as strawberry shortcake and Ice
cold watermelon. Plans also In
clude a fresh do-nut stand.
By 1965 the enterprise expects
to have ready a small, but well
equipped, building which will make
available to the public fresh chick
ens at wholesale prices. Arrange
ments for this have already been
made with a local independent
chicken grower, who assut is that
his chickens will always be fresh
and of the highest quality.
In addition to planning and ex
ecuting the business end of their
venture, Bob and Melvin are ex
cited about the landscaping po
tential of their new site. Orna-
mental shrubs and shade trees
will be planted to enhance the nat-
uraly beauty of the area while Im
proving its shopping convenience.
The open-air restaurant will be de
signed as a tourist, as well as
a commercial, attraction In order
to provide a memorable "some
thing different" for Hoodland vis
itors.
The driver who picked up Henry
Francis Meeker in Boring Nov. 7
and saved him from possibly bleed
ing to death, was identified as
Robert Long of Boring. Long found
Meeker lying in front of the Boring
post office after his left arm had
been cut off by a planer in the
Summit saw mill.
A kitchen range standing in front
of Lambs second hand store was
demolished last week when a car
parked east of the store on Main
Street slipped its brakes and rolled
down the Incline.
Pupils were dismissed from
classes at the Bull Run grade
school Monday afternoon and Tues
day when an oil truck broke elec
tric wires leading to the pump
motor and left the school tempor
arily without water.
Bill Henselman, star quarter
back was the unanimous choice
of coaches for the al -star team
in the new Wilco league.
Boy Scout Troop 248 went on a
camping trip to the Kiwanis Camp
near Government Camp a week
ago. A hike up the Ski Bowl was
taken by scouts wanting to pass
their second class hiking while
others just made the hike half
way up.
Accompanying the boys was
scout master Wink Chilton and
four other men. (Ed. Note: Troop
248 is now on an inactive status
because there does not seem to be
a man in all the Sandy area who
is willing to give up a little of his
leisure time to act as scout
master.)
