Up and Down the Mountain
When the Pathfinders, a junior
Adventist organization, rangdoor-
bells on Halloween night, they did
not ask for the usual “Treat” but
asked instead for food for the need-
y. Through their efforts they col­
lected over a hundred cans and
food packages which will be used
to fill out the Thanksgivingbaskets
their church provides annually for
the poor.
Mrs. Quenton Douglas, leader
of the g’oup, said she and her co­
workers are deeply grateful to all
those who contributed to the
project.

Curtailments in all programs,
except aid to the blind, of the
County welfare budget became ef­
fective Nov. 1, with statewide cuts
totaling $4,505,309. i
Mrs. Bernice Thomas, Clacka­
mas county welfare director, ex­
plained these curtailments include
a reduction from 85 to 75 per
cent of the basic minimum require­
ments in the general assistance
food program.
Monthly property tax allowances
will be eliminated from the bud­
get starting next year with re­
cipients over 65 required to file
for property tax deferment, effec­
tive July 1. The two-dollar prop­
erty upkeep allowance will be ellm-
1 ■ ted, as will the five-dollar in­
crease in nursing home rates.
“The hardest hit,” Miss Thom­
as emphasized, “are recipients of
‘stepfather grants’, which will
be eliminated unless he has chil ­
dren of his own and is eligible
for aid to dependent children of un­
employed parents.”
Other reductions will be, out of
state grants, from one year to two
months; funeral costs, 10 per cent;
personal, incidental and clothing
allowances in nursing home grants,
25 per cent; and medical aid en­
rollment 50 per cent, but with no
change in benefits.
Miss Thomas said that, “In all
programs the 10 per cent increase
in doctor’s allotments and 4 per
cent Increase in hospital al­
lotments directed by the legisla­
ture will be eliminated.”
September payments in the coun­
ty totaled $162,463. Of this $28,-
686 represents county funds;$53,-
803.73, state funds; and $88,461,-
87, federal grants.

provide current income through
Treasury checks each 6 months.
H Bonds held tv maturity will
yield an average of 3-3/4 per
cent interest per year.

The place was called Rock Cor­
ral, a landmark to the early pio­
neers coming west over the Ore­
gon Trail.
I wonder how many of you people
know the location of historic corral
rock near Sandy.
Corral Rock might tell many a
tale if it could speak.
This great rock north of the
Sandy river was a spot where many
weary travelers rested themselves
and their cattle before they un­
dertook the last hard miles to
Oregon City.
There was a cleared area and
the pioneers built a fence circ-
ling about two acres with the rock
in the middle; against the rock
they built their camp fires.
From this resting place the long
hard pull began up over the rld^e
between the Sandy and Little San­
dy river which was called the Dev­
ils Backbone.
The fence and the immigrants
are gone, but this great rock Is
still there, almost hidden by brush
and trees, standing sturdy and
strong as the wills of those who
drove the ox teams over the road
when they were Oregon bound.
Do you know that Bull Run lake
was once called Chitwood; the
Chinwook word for black bear?
Bull Run river received its name
because cattle escaped from the
immigrants and ran wild in the
area.
Camp creek was named by Joel
Palmer.
Palmer was one of the first road
promoters and named the creek
while trying to locate a reason­
able grade down Laurel hill.
The Sierra club, founded by
James Muir in 1892 to preserve
the scenic resources of the United
States have done and are still do­
ing a wonderful job.
An open letter to my friend Lige
Coalman:
This old mountain goat too, is
starting to squeak and groan, and
sort of travels the trail these
days in second or low gear.
I’m looking forward to your
book of Memoirs and hope the
publishers get it off the press
soon.
I’m real happy Lige that you
liked my column about George
Huckleberry Flynn.
I first met Huck, a number
of years ago when huckleberry
picking on Zig Zag mountain I
found out I wasn’t so smart. To
make a long story short, I had to
spend the night on the mountain.
Next morning I made my way thru
the brush to Devils Park, tired
and hungry.
Huck and Mom Flynn camping
there gave me something to eat
and a cup of coffee out of the
blackest old coffee pot I’ve ever
seen, but nothing ever tasted bet­
ter.
When I visited Huck and Mom I
asked about the old black coffee
pot. Huck told me it had given up
the ghost and had gone to the hap­
py hunting grounds.
Say hello to that old Tillicum
of mine.

visit you and Hans.
I’ll try and make it next sum­
mer and we will have a real bull
fest.
So till then you and Hans just
stay put and I will sort of keep my
white lady company.

The United Farm Agency, an­
nounced this week that Jerry W
Jackson
has joined Oliver E
Thorne as a representative at
United's Sandy branch office.
The office located on U. s
Hwy 26. 4 miles west of Sandy.
Jackson is a retired Air Force
colonel who entered the real es­
tate business following his retire-
ment from the service, He was
transferred here from United’s
Eugene office.
United Farm Agency has 24
offices in Oregon, with 11 of these
being in the Willamette Valley.
The Sandy office serves the rur­
al area of Multnomah County east
of the Willamette river andClack-
amas County north of the Clack­
amas river.

Dept, were credited with saving
Vernon Fritchie’s saw mill, just
off Bonnstead road, from going up
In flames.
Joe Saulsberry, John Mills and
Guy Chilton each brought back an
elk Monday morning. The trio had
been out about a week at a camp
in eastern Oregon which they called
“Shangri-La.’’ “Where a feller
life, and I love every moment of
it.
Well the old team at Summit is
gone, Laurie Bartley at Oregon
State, Charley “Monkey” Lake
in the army, Jerry “T Bar Hag­
an” in the air force.
Closing this column by saying
I’m going to miss that “Old Gang
Of Mine.”
