Thursday. Sept. 26. 1963 (Sec. 1) The Sandy (Ore.) Post Architect Scheduled At Luncheon UP and DOWN the MOUNTAIN By JOE KIEFER Hunting season is here again, a joyous yet some times tragic session far those who follow the lure of rifle and scattergun. In line with this is a run down of the ten commandments of Shooting Safety. I m sure you know them all but maybe you know someone who doesn't. 1. Treat every gun with the respect due a loaded gun. 2. Watch that muzzle: carry your gun safely, keep the safety" on until you're ready to shoot. 3. Unload guns when not in use. Take down or have actions open; guns should be carried in cases in shooting areas. 4. Be sure barrel! is clear of obstructions, and that yoL have ammunition of the proj - er size. 5. Be sure of your target bi - fore you pull that trigger. 6. Avoid all horseplay wit 1 guns, never point at anythinj you do not want to shoot. 7. Never pull a gun toward; you by the muzzle; never dim > a tree, or straddle a fence, c r jump a ditch with a loaded gun. I 8. Never shoot a bullet at a flat hard surface or water, or at a target where your back- drop is inadequate. 9. Store guns and ammuni tion separately beyond the reach of children. 10. Avoid alcoholic beverages before and during the hunt. Sandy Police Chief Dean Coffey« Res. MU 7-4656 J Off. MU 7 2921 • Mountain Goat Introduction of the shaggy mountain goat in Oregon was in 1950 when five were brought from Washington to form a nucleus band for the Wallow- Fed Grote of Joseph on a re cent flight over Mt. Sacajaw- ea in the Wallowas counted 19 mountain goats of which nine were kids. These shaggy mountaineers have prospered. Furture hunting of the king of the American game birds, the wild turkey, is assured. In every area where they were released in 1961 they have shown a spread and increase. In Tygh Valley brooks have been sighted a total of 18 hens with 83 chicks. The Game Commission has done a real job on both the mountain goat and the wild turkey in our state, but I have to critisize the Game Commis sion for allowing anyone the rght to hunt our black bear with a pack of hounds. Bear Hunter I heard about a fellow who was hunting his lost pack of hounds in the Sandy Creek area and how he told of kill ing 10 bear in two weeks. Big deal! I wonder how many he would of got without his dogs. Recently seen on our high way at Rhododendron a dead yearling cub bear draped over the hood of a car. Things like this get my Irish up and when this Irishman gets mad you have a cougar with a knot in his tail. But how about a little hu- mor. This is a classic story Back on Long Island, lived an old clam spearer and eel digger, who was known far and wide for his story • telling talents. One day he was walking along when he met a stranger. How's the duck shooting down here?" asked the strang er. "Pretty good." replied the old clam spearer and eel dig ger, altho the duck season was past gone. And he went on to tell one of his fanciest whoppers. With his trusty shotgun, he said, he had brought down 60 ducks, six at a time. He had picked them off at 200 yards and when they fell into the bay he just whistled and they drifted right up to his boat. The stranger listened with interest and then asked, "Do you know who I am? Well. I'm the new game war- den." "Is zat so"? responded that old clam spearer and eel dig- ger. "And do you know who T am? "Well I'm the biggest liar on Long Island." So Long, Good hunting.
