I Dead plants are appearing in I many fields, he said, yet these same plants may have made 1 vigorous growth last summer, This condition is not new as j growers have lost plants this way for years but losses are greater this year. At present most of the trouble appears to come from plants be ing planted in too wet soil. Red raspberries will not stand water around the roots for eyen short periods of time. The roots seem to smother and become weaken ed then root rot diseases, already present in the soil, attack the roots. ! Laboratory analysis of soil and root samples taken last week have not been received but vis ual inspection suggests Verticil- llum and A rm illaria root rot as ; being the most prevalent root rots Both of these are soil borne and no control measures are available. Survey work being conducted includes gathering complete in formation on each field where plants show indications of disease. Information gathered consists of visual examination of fields, unhealthy plants, check- , ¡ng for presence of insects or ' disease, depth to hard pan lay er, type of soil, locations of trou ble areas in planting in relation to wet ground and vigor of other plants. In addition, samples of soil and roots are taken for plant, food and nematode analysis. Any oth er condition noticed such us cul tivation and fertilizer practices are noted. Ralph Clark. Oregon State col lege extension horticultural spec ialist Is conducting the study.
