From Alaska
WEMME—Mrs. L aura LeMond
of Wemrae was pleasantly su r­
prised by a short visit from her
youngest son, wife and two daugh-
lers, who flew down from Haines,
Alaska.
Mr. and Mrs. LeMond taught
school at Haines last year and plan
to teach th e re this next year. He
gradated w ith high honors last
Ju n e with a m asters degree. His
schooling was delayed by World
War Two. He served three years
over seas and was dlsclyirged with
a m aster sargeants rating, then
finished his education at the Mon­
m outh college of education.
They plan to live in Monmouth
when they finish th e ir tim e In
Alaska. His wife taught several
term s in Astoria, G rande Ronde,
and Fall City. Both have been
asked to teach at Monmouth, while
they are visiting there this sum­
mer.
Mrs. LeMond has two other sons.
One with the Maccabees In P ort­
land and the other a Doctor at
Austin, Texas.

KELSO—Ex-pupils and teach­
ers of Kelso school gathered Sun­
day, Ju n e 10 for th eir annual re ­
union in th e form er school build­
ing, now known as the Sandy
G range hall, with 40 pupils and
th ree teachers present.
O pening th e day's program was
th e serving of a potluck dinner
with Mrs. M ildred D ecker and
Mrs. Dorothy Sanderson in charge.
T he program folowing the din­
ner hour consisted of rem iniscent
talks by teachers and pupils with
Miss Ruth Baumback as chairman.
Bee Nelson, who has spent his
en tire life in the community, gave
a very interesting account of
school days in the old log school
house, having begun his education
th ere in 1882.
Teachers present were Mrs. A.C.
Baumback, prim ary teacher, who
began her Oregon teaching there
in Septem ber 1919, Mrs. Caroline
V aeretti Hauser, principal during
the early 192U’s and Mrs. Louise
Nelson, principal from Septem ber
1917 to December 1919, and again
from Septem ber 1944 to Ju n e 1946
when th e school was consolidated
with the Sandy district.
D uring the program a moment
of silent prayer was observed in
memory of Robert Jonsrud, Robert
■Jail, students during the early
days of the school and Mrs. Sophie
Barnum, principal some 40 years
ago, all having passed away since
the last meeting.
All expressed the hope th at a
larg er attendance will be present
for th e reunion again next year.

BRIGHTWOOD—The semi-an­
nual benefit dance, sponsored by
the Mt. Hood F ire departm ent,
will be held this Saturday night,
Ju n e 23 at Log Lodge in Rhodod­
endron. D ancing will begin at
9 PM.
Proceeds from th e benefit dan­
ce held by th e group in December
were used to purchase 200 feet
of 2 1/2 inch hose and a dry chem ­
ical extinguisher to be used by
the fire departm ent. Proceeds from
the dance th is Saturday will be
used for operational expenses.
Those planning to attend are
not only suporting a fine volunteer
organization but have an evening
of fun in store for them.

Mr. C urrin is a patient In an
