Yes, $626.50 is the amount of investment re
quired to add each new telephone to our rapidly
growing system! The instrument itself costs about
$25, but this is only the beginning. There is a moun
tain of vital equipment behind your telephone, such
as cable, wire, switchboards, buildings, and a great
deal more. Without these, your phone would be a
dead and useless object.
We are adding new telephones to our system at
a rate of almost 10,000 a year. To make these new
phones possible and to improve our service to all
our subscribers, we have invested over 21 million
dollars since January 1, 1946. This year we have
budgeted over 6 million dollars more, and our task
is by no means done.
It costs more than twice as much to add each
new t. loehone today compared with costs at the end
of World War II. Operating expenses have soared,
t >o. Average wage rates of our employees have
doubled since 1 9-!5, and our overall operating expenses
per telephone lave risen 50"i in this same period,
Reluct mt ly, we have found it necessary to
re tu
t modes t increases in your telephone rates.
Without thi.. 1 increases, it will lie impossible to
continue our improvement and expansion programs,
d, igned to bring you the finest possible telephone
service at the lowest possible cost.
