n itely continued. It continued to function
along pretty legitim ate lines for a f e w
years. Then, a fte r the war, the political ra p
ing started. RFC loans were made for lux
ury hotels, gam bling establishm ents, fa c to r
ies th a t never functioned, snake farm s, ra il
roads on the basis of false financial s ta te
m ents, and for countless o th er purposes
w hich had the blessing of political friends
in the T rum an ad m inistration. It d id n ’t
q ia tte r w hether the project was im p o rta n t
to the n a tio n 's welfare, or even w orthw hile
from a national point of view. P olitics was
all th a t m attered.
E ven with the present tig h ten in g of cred
it, th ere certainly is no valid reason for con
tin u an ce of such a lending agency a t th is
tim e. In addition, the federal tre a su ry will
be enhanced by retu rn to it of som e $1,-
168,000 in assets which it is estim ated the
RFC will have at the end of the fiscal year.
T hus the dissolution of th is agency will a t
once put an end to one source of political
g ra ft and a t the sam e tim e enrich the tre a s
ury. Is it any wonder we say “Good rid
dan ce?”
