THIS COULD MEAN YOUR LIFE

(This is one of a series of messages sponsored by the
Sandy Oil Company. The following is an excerpt from an
interview with, Civil Defense A dm inistrator (Millard F.
^Caldwell, Jr.)
Q. Now th at the second A-bomb has been exploded
by Russia, Mr. Caldwell, do you think this will
m ake the American people aw are of the importance
of civil defense?
A. This explosion is a grim warning, straight from
Russia, th a t it has both the atomic bombs and the
means of delivering them to our cities. I t will em
phasize to the American people the immediate need
fo r adequate protection of the home front through
civil defense.
Q. W hat should .the average person do to get ready
for this attack? Should he take a first-aid course?
Should he build a shelter in his back yard?
A, The first thing he ought to do is to acquaint
him self with the possibilities so th a t when an attack
happens it won’t come as a great shock, a t least as
ño greater shock th an necessary. Next, he should
take a first-aid course. He should read the m anuals
we have produced which show him how to fight
small fires. Fire storm s develop from small fires and
the fire departm ent will not be able to answ er every
call—he’ll have to pu t his own fire out.
