the pretty daytime dress (1754)
consists of just two pieces to sew
together. Then make the easy darts
at the neckline and waistline, so
that your dress will be slim and
softly full over the bosom, edge the
sleeves and neckline with lace or
ruching—and there you are! Any
body can do it, and it’s so attrac
tive and comfortable. Linen, ging
ham, batiste and lawn are nice ma
terials for this.
Cool, Comely Jacket Frock.
If you're looking for an extremely
smart and pleasantly youthful jacket
ensemble in women’s sizes, 1761 is
the pattern for you. Gathers make
the bodice just full enough, and the
paneled skirt, cut to a high waist
line, is beautifully slenderizing. The
smart jacket is the most flattering
length—certain to make ygur hips
look slim. Chiffon, georgette, linen
or pure dye silk print are pliant fab
rics in which this design looks par
ticularly well.
D E T S Y w as all agog to have a
bed with no foot piece and a
padded head to m atch h er spread.
Ingenuity would have to substitute
for m oney, and she w as seriously
considering this and th a t when the
plum ber w as called to fix a leaky
Pipe.
As a tiny tot B etsy alw ays said,
“ L et m e w atch,” when w orkm en

grown up m uch. The plum ber took
a fine saw out of his tool bag and
saw ed a pipe in two ju st as if it
w ere wood. R ight then som ething
clicked for Betsy. T hat old iron
bed in the attic! It could be cut
down. It w as cut down, as shown
in the sketch.
The top of this bed is padded
with cotton basted to m uslin.
B etsy used an old com forter for
padding. H er m ind seem s to jum p
with the g re atest of ease from w a
te r pipes to iron beds and from
padding to old com forters.

Style Notes
Dainty handkerchiefs are as
numerous as spring flowers.
Striped jackets and plain colored
skirts are so popular this season.
Straight coats on boxy lines and
reefers are the two favorite silhou
ettes.
There’s no danger of losing a 1
handbag if you have it fastened to
a glove.
Evening wigs made of pastel-col
ored ostrich are a fancy from Schi
aparelli.
An innovation in footwear that has
caught on remarkably fast is the
mesh shoe.
The deep South has had a dis
tinct influence on the pretty roman
tic fashions of this season.
A new medium for costume jewel
ry is being developed in glazed pot
tery of the type made in the South- I
west.
In keeping with the Victorian
theme of some of the current fash
ions are dainty lockets and pendants
of leather.
