Chamber and the Parks … .”
Parks
“And there will be lots and
lots of food,” added Clancy who
gave the Parks report and noted
that a clean up of the park was
scheduled for last Saturday to
“cut down a lot of ivy.”
Port of Port
Orford/Watershed
The Port of Port Orford report
was given by Luhr: “Rep. Peter
DeFazio has forwarded to the
Appropriations Committee two
applications,” said Luhr, indicat-
ing that this was a significant
step forward in the possible
granting of the funds requested;
$850,000 to rebuild the cannery
and $810,000 for dredging.
“Not very many get by (to
this point),” said Luhr, who
added a point about the South
Coast Watershed Committee.
“The committee met last
night and voted to sever any
relationship with the city gov-
ernment of Port Orford,” said
Luhr.
At the last meeting of the P.O.
council a request by the
Watershed Committee for some
funds for a study was rejected
due to lack of funds. It was sug-
gested that the Watershed’s
actions might be linked to this
rejection, which Luhr met only
with arched eyebrows and a
slight smile.
“Well, we wish them well in
the future,” said McArdle, to
general assent of the councilors
present.
Mayor’s report
In the mayor’s report, Auborn
noted a new wrinkle in the
efforts to build a new visitor’s
center at Battle Rock City Park.
Seems Auborn checked with
the Oregon Department of
Transportation and “their right-
of-way (from Highway 101)
runs right through the existing
Visitor’s Center,” he said.
As serious as this might
sound, it was noted that the
problem resulted from old
agreements overlapping and the
general consensus was that it
would be dealt with.
“A handshake agreement that
probably happened 30 years
ago,” said Murphy.
A new ordinance
Next the council considered
adoption of City Ordinance
2010-02, Exemption of Water
Connection SDCs for Fire
Suppression Systems.
“I think that there should be
(included) a contribution to the
(general fund),” suggested Luhr
to the council.
“Have you done a study on
the city’s that have done this
(exemption)?” asked Smith.
“The majority (of Oregon
cities) exempt fire suppression
systems, but not all,” said
Murphy.
“Well, we should encourage
businesses to put fire suppres-
sion systems in,” continued
Gary Robertson
Smith. “It’s good for both the
business and the (safety of) the
businesses around them.”
Clancy opposed the ordi-
nance, feeling that it reduced the
fees which might have been
generated for the city.
At the conclusion of discus-
sion the council voted along 3-2
lines in favor of adopting the
new ordinance, with Luhr and
Clancy voting against.
Community Garden
The next item, a right-of-way
for the new Port Orford Rotary
First Harvest Community
Garden adjacent to the ball field
at Buffington Park, was much
more quickly adopted, 5-0.
“This is a good idea,” said
Auborn. “I hope a lot of people
take advantage of the
Community Garden and it pro-
duces a lot of food.”
For anyone who would like
information, participation, or
your own plot of rich soil to
grow in, call McArdle at (541)

Consent calendar
The consent calendar, consist-
ing of recognition of Visitor
Center volunteers; Jim Billings,
Jim Hajek, Mary Colozzi and
Steve Roemen was quickly
passed, 5-0, with accolades
offered for the work of those
honored.
A new appointment
Next the council considered
the appointment of Gary
Robertson to the Planning
Commission.
This was preceded by a
strong endorsement by Smith,
who noted “Gary’s experience
in building design and that he’s
a member of the Tribe.”
However, this potential
appointment provoked some
opposition from Clancy, who
noted that in her estimate
Auborn only appointed “his
friends” to the Planning
Commission.
This remark left Auborn
momentarily speechless, before
he protested “Caroline, half of
the people in this audience … ,”
and paused.
Looking around the room the
politician in our mayor asserted
itself and he picked up his sen-
tence where he had left it hanging
