For the Port Orford News
‘The Beautiful Children of
Port Orford and Langlois’
Elaine Roemen, President of
the Port Orford Arts Council,
started the Children's Saturday
Art program to enrich the art
curriculum available to our ele-
mentary children in Port Orford
and Langlois. She and Donna
Smith, photographer for the
Children's Program, gave a slide
show talk for Rotarians on the
highlights of the Arts program,
which has been offering a color-
ful array of free art classes for
elementary children since last
March and will continue
through June of 2010.
Unfortunately our elementary
school does not have the funds
to hire an art teacher but last
Spring, Superintendent Ruby
Price and Driftwood Principal,
Sean Wells welcomed the Arts
Council's program to help fill
that void. Through the Arts
Council there are committed
and proven teachers who are
local artists. The Library is part-
nering with the Arts Council by
providing the Freedom of
Speech room on the first and
third Saturdays of each month
for the two-hour classes.
With a timely idea, a great
space, art teachers, school and
parent support, the Arts Council
applied for a grant to fund the
program for one year. They
received $2400 through the gen-
erosity of the Oregon
Community Foundation, which
allows for teacher pay and
materials. The Arts Council
hopes to raise funds for the next
Children's arts program.

"These classes have made my
heart smile. Making art in a
relaxed encouraging environment
has helped the children feel good
about their creative products and
themselves,” said Elaine.
Donna Smith was able to cap-
ture this truth in her loving pho-
tographs. The children have cre-
ated expressive paintings and
drawings, beaded critters, cre-
ative mobiles, colorful collages,
crayon resist, monoprints, ani-
mal habitats, lavender wands,
story books, apple dolls, tie dye
t-shirts and there are still many
more classes to come.
Photographing the children at
their creative work has helped
Donna appreciate her own artis-
tic gifts that are on display at
the PO Library in an exhibit of
her children's portraits titled,
"The Beautiful Children of
Port Orford and Langlois.”

but the entire evening goes awry and
even casts doubt on the viability of the
Bratters' new marriage, as Corie tries
unsuccessfully to loosen Paul up.
All ends well, however, and
McKenzie and Smith are full of youthful
appeal in this light domestic comedy.
Barefoot in the Park “runs” through
three weekends, at 7:30 p.m., Friday and
Saturdays and at 2 p.m. Sundays, on
October 23, 24, 25, 30, 31, and

Coming in February 2010 (dates to be
announced), another murderous comedy
with mixed casts from Port Orford’s
Theatre 101 and Foxwell Productions,
“Faithful,” by Chazz Palminteri.
This comedy thriller revolves around
hitman Tony (Michael S. Fox), who has
been hired to kill Maggie (Victoria
Weller) by her husband Jack, who thinks
she is unfaithful.
Maggie claims that Jack is actually
the unfaithful one and she has hired
Tony because she lacks the courage to
commit suicide, but now she wants him
to kill Jack instead.
When Jack arrives, roles and alle-
giances shift. Violent and comical twists
develop, ratcheting up the tension and
generating questions: Who hired whom,
and why? Is Tony a hitman? And ulti-
mately, who will die?
Up next in Spring 2010(dates to be
announced), a one woman show,
“Shirley Valentine,” starring Theatre
101’s own very talented, Perri Rask who
portrays Shirley, a middle-aged
Liverpool housewife, who finds herself
talking to the wall while she prepares
her husband's chip'n'egg, wondering
what happened to her life.
She compares scenes in her current
life with what she used to be like and
feels she's stagnated and in a rut. But
when her best friend wins an all-expens-
es-paid vacation to Greece for two,
Shirley begins to see the world, and her
self, in a different light. It was written
by Kathy Li.
And coming in the summer 2010, our
very first musical review … “Portraits,”
by Irving Berlin. Starring a host of Port
Orford performers.
See you at the shows!

Parks news
The chimney has been com-
pleted on the Old Jail (Thanks
Eric Carter)! The next task is to
put on the roof, which must be
completed before any internal
work is started.
If you would like to help the
Parks in their quest to restore
the jail, make sure to stop by the
Community Building on
Saturday October 31 between 9
a.m. and 4 p.m. to buy one of
the 29 tiles left that were made
from the ivy that once engulfed
the jail.
You can own a piece of histo-
ry for only $10 a tile! And as
always, the Parks is happy to
take any additional donations.
At the next Parks meeting on
November 3 at 6 p.m., the
potential for a Community
Garden at Buffington Park will
be discussed.
Other topics include a Frisbee
Golf Course, the lighting at
Battle Rock, and, of course, the
Old Jail Restoration.
Join us in the Gable
Chambers at City Hall if you
would like to contribute to the
discussion.
