LETTERS, from page 3
rear-ended by a speeding
moron and the travellers will be
going slow enough to pay a lit-
tle nore attention to our town.
Now, let's make what they see
more appealing so they will
want to stop, look, shop, rest ,
eat , etc. etc. We could have
some sort of a common or
blended atmosphere. We are a
town of historical periods: min-
ing, logging, fishing. We
should not be a town of hap-
hazard , mindless whimsey.We
need direction, not for what is
already here, but rather for
what is to come. We need a
comprehensive zoning plan ,
including architectural review ,
for the 101 corridor.
I fully realize that about
now some of you have risen to
ceiling height and are sputter-
ing unprintables. I wish to
assure you that what I am sug-
gesting is nowhere near as dra-
conian as the carpetbagger real
estate brokers or developers
would have you believe.
Remember , our town
deserves better than to have it's
future dependent upon urinals
and poorly sited architectural
monuments.
Let the games begin ...
Respectfully,
Jim Hajek,

‘Where is the outrage … ‘
Where is the outrage people?
Have we just become a country
and a county of sheeple? I
can’t believe the people of
Curry County that live in Pistol
River, Gold Beach, and Port
Orford that make up the Curry
Health District aren’t screem-
ing bloody murder.
Without any input from the
taxpayers of the Curry Health
District, the five member board
voted to spend 2 million dol-
lars of your money to buy a
piece of property in downtown
Brookings. Now they are in
the process of getting a loan of
11.5 million dollars to con-
struct a building for a
clinic/emergency room/ hospi-
tal on the property. They are
thinking about putting an ini-
tiative on the ballot to annex
Brookings and Harbor into the
Curry Health Tax District. If
the people of
Brookings/Harbor turn it down,
which I would hope they are
smart enough to do, you are
going to be stuck with paying
for building a hospital in
Brookings. Since only about
one third of the population of
Curry County live in the Curry
Health District, the financial
burden you are being saddled
with will be astronomical.
With a new hospital in
Brookings paid for by you, do
you really believe the old hos-
pital in Gold Beach will be
kept open? I would bet it will
be reduced to a clinic like
Brookings has now, so the peo-
ple of Port Orford would be
forced to go to Bandon for the
nearest hospital while paying
for the one in Brookings.
Several years ago, the people
of Brookings could have had
Sutter Coast Hospital, but it
was turned down by a vote of
the Brookings voters, so the
hospital was built in Crescent
City. A couple of years ago
Asante Health looked at build-
ing a hospital in Brookings. It
didn’t work out. The popula-
tion of our area just can’t sup-
port three hospitals and we
can’t even recruit enough doc-
tors to take care of us now.
The fact that the Curry
Health District board of direc-
tors has the power to, without a
vote of the members of their
tax district, obligate it’s tax-
payers to a debt of 13.5 million
dollars should infuriate it’s
members and cause a recall of
all board members as well as
scare the voters of Brookings
and Harbor from annexing into
their Health District.
