If so, we are interested in speaking with you. Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, in conjunction with cooperative groups Friends of Cape Blanco and the Point Orford Heritage Society, are asking for your help to accurate- ly record history. Specifically, we are interested in information pertaining to the historic Hughes ranch (housed within Cape Blanco State Park) and the former US Coast Guard Station (now known as Port Orford Heads State Park). We welcome any creditable accounts, depictions of former structures, clarification of pur- pose for existing structures and any other compelling stories or information about the lives of people who lived on the south- ern Oregon Coast. In addition, we welcome any documents or photographs you may want to share. It is our intention to bring together these memories, experi- ences and accounts so that they may be documented and pre- served. Ultimately, this informa- tion will be used in future inter- pretive exhibits, storyboards or other multimedia displays in order to help explain the histori- cal importance of these places. Thank you, Maggie Busto Oregon Parks and Recreation ‘Three percent solution’ It was only recently that I realized that every time I use plastic (either a credit or a debit card) to pay for goods/services, the people I’m doing business with will be nicked three per- cent by the credit card company (Visa, Mastercharge, etc.). Sending three percent of our over the counter purchases out of town can take a big bite out of our local economy. I am now paying exclusively by check or with cash. I urge my fellow citizens to consider doing the same whenever possi- ble. Erna Barnett Port Orford ‘The evidence supports cre- ation’ The first and second laws of thermodynamics, which are among the most important laws of science, give evidence that evolution is not science, as I explained in an letter I submit- ted in the June 17 issue of Port Orford News, but not only that, they also give evidence in sup- port of creation as the correct view of the origin of the uni- verse. First, what is the meaning of “creation” or “create”? The pri- mary meaning of the word “cre- ate” is: To produce something from nothing. Since the first law of thermodynamics – which states that matter and energy can be neither created nor destroyed – shows us that natural process- es could not have produced or created the matter and energy in the universe from nothing, then the logical conclusion is that they were created supernaturally. If the cause of the physical universe cannot be natural, it must be supernatural. The Bible tells us: “ In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1). According to the Bible, the supernatural cause of the universe is God. Here we see that the Bible, and the evidence in nature from the first law of thermodynamics, fit together, like puzzle pieces, each adding to the other, and together contributing to the big picture of origins. The evidence from the first law of thermodynamics helps to verify the truth of the creation account in Genesis. The evi- dence of the second law of ther- modynamics – law of increasing entropy (or disorder) – is every- where. Cars wind down which is why they eventu- ally wind up in the junkyard. Get it? Anyway, since this law applies to the entire physical universe, it brings us to the question: How did the universe get “wound up,” or energized and organized in the first place? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that, if a clock or anything else is winding down, it must have been wound up at some point in the past; if some- thing is getting old, it must have been new at one time. The Bible tells us:”...in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is...” (Exodus 20:11); “And God saw everything that He had made, and, behold, it was very good.” (Genesis 1:31). The second law points back to an original creation when every- thing was “wound up” and made very good. Ever since then, things just naturally wind down all by themselves. By the way, how did the principles behind the laws of thermody- namics come into existence? An evolutionist, if asked this question, might say that they evolved. But since scientific laws are constant and unchang- ing principles, they could not have evolved, because evolution involves many changes. A law that changes, or evolves, is not a law. The much more logical answer is that God established the two laws of thermodynamics as constants for a purpose – to protect and govern His creation in a consistent manner. To sum it all up, the first law points to a supernatural origin for the matter and energy in the universe. The second law points back to a time when that matter and energy was supernaturally organized, or “wound up.” Natural processes, all of which are subject to the two laws of thermodynamics, would have been totally incapable of pro- ducing the material universe in its currently organized and com- plex state, contrary to what evo- lution would have us believe. Finally, the laws themselves, which could not have evolved, are much more easily explained as having been established by a Creator for the purpose of gov- erning his creation. That I have mentioned before. But, to give you an idea how times have changed over the years, lets take another look about the summer of 1963. Unknown to Ruth, who was ten years old at the time, Joe and Richard Dilling were friends, and Richard owned the ranch up over the hill into the upper Crystal Creek area. Joe also built some of the old logging roads for Richard. I realize not everybody could do this, but Joe had a D7 Caterpillar, which is obviously smaller than a D8 or D9, but to a ten year old Granddaughter, it must have seemed a formidable size. Well, one summer day, Joe put Ruth on the seat next to himself, and off they went, building a road over the back of his property, and somehow entering Richard Dilling's. Can you imagine the excite- ment for a ten year old girl as the big Catepillar built its road through some new terrain, push- ing its way over the mountain and down the valley into Crystal Creek area. I know it is indeed quite an experience. Why did Grandpa Joe go through all that effort? He did it to take his Granddaughter fish- ing. But, the question here would be; did Ruth catch any- thing? As a matter of fact they did catch a few Trout. However, a big Bullhead got off the hook.
