May 5
1.) Officers received a report
of credit card fraud. Cards have
been cancelled, and report filed.
2.) Male transient contacted
about sleeping in women’s rest-
room at Battle Rock Park. Later
in the day, the same male tran-
sient was contacted for criminal
trespass on private property.
Subject arrested for criminal tres-
pass.
May 6
Police received a report of an
audible alarm at Driftwood
Elementary School. Police
responded and found an open
door. Curry County Sheriff’s
Deputy also responded, and the
two officers checked the building
for intruders. No one found,
door secured.
Traffic enforcement activity
was fairly light this week.
Officers issued 17 citations for
speeding, along with 17 warn-
ings. There were also five warn-
ings issued for seatbelt viola-
tions. Police issued three cita-
tions, and 13 warnings for misc.
equipment violations.
We again have a tie for speed-
er of the week. Two drivers
were cited for 47 miles an hour
in a 20 mile an hour school zone,
with lights flashing. These cita-
tions were issued just as the chil-
dren got out of school.
We have one driver for dis-
honorable mention. This person
was cited for careless driving for
turning left in front of three
lanes, cutting very close to two
drivers in the opposing lanes of
traffic. Driver was proceeding
northbound in the right lane, and
decided at the last second to go
to the grocery store. Driver was
also cited for driving while sus-
pended.
Seat belt safety
The Curry County Sheriff’s
Office will participate in the
Three Flags Safety Belt Blitz
with other agencies in Curry
County.
The second of three Safety
Belt Blitz’s for 2009 will start
May 18, and go through May 31.
The Three Flags Campaign is
an international selective traffic
enforcement program (STEP)
and involves hundreds of law
enforcement agencies.
Since October 1993, the
Campaign has sought to reduce
the number of motor vehicle-
related deaths and injuries by
increasing public awareness of
laws regarding safety belt use
and other traffic issues including
DUII and Speed. While these
goals are pursued year-round by
many agencies, the Campaign
provides federal overtime fund-
ing which allows police officers
statewide to join together for
two-week periods of intensive,
high-visibility enforcement.
Deputies conduct local belt
use surveys and public education
activities during the weeks just
prior to and following each blitz.
It was a very
wet year
Contributed new clip

measuring just how
high 157 inches of
rain is by using a pole
next to his house. The
year was 1983 and the
rain poured down all
year long. The original
picture was taken by
long-time Port Orford
News Editor Paul
Peterson. This year
Deboyd says weʼll be
lucky to ready into the
80-inch region for
year-long rainfall. See
page 4 for an update.
Campaign performance is meas-
ured by local belt use rates,
enforcement contacts and public
information activities reported by
each agency. According to the
last survey, before the blitz in
February, the safety belt use rate
for Curry County was 93 percent
and after the last blitz, the safety
belt use rate for Curry County
was 99 percent%.
The emphasis of this second
blitz starting May 18, will be on
belt use in commercial
vehicles/pickups, new Child
Protective Seat laws and
Speed/Move-Over. As always,
the motto of the Three Flags
Safety Belt Blitz is “Click it or
Ticket.” If your not wearing a
safety belt, or your passengers
are not wearing safety belts, then
you should expect a ticket. It is
also imperative that you wear
your safety belt as it was
designed to be worn. If you
drive with the shoulder belt
behind you, then you can also be
given a ticket for improper use
of a safety belt.
Drive safely and responsibly.
— Sergeant John Ward
Tickets may be purchased at
the Downtown Funzone or at
the door for $10.
Sunday, May 24, Laurie
Johnson with her Master stu-
dents of Tum Pai Tai Chi Sword
Form will hold a live demon-
stration at 2 p.m. at the Port
Orford Public Library patio. In
case of rain, the demonstration
will be moved to Theater 101 at
the Seaside Plaza.
Monday, May 25, the
American Legion will conduct a
Memorial Day Service at the
Port Orford Cemetery at 10 a.m.
Following the service at the
cemetery, a second Memorial
Day Service will be held at the
dock.
All events and exhibits are
free to the public, except the
concert and dance which is $10
if you buy your tickets before at
the funzone, or $15 at the door.
