Port Orford News Page 8 • April 22, 2009 By Elaine Roemen For the Port Orford News First of all: A hearty thank you to all who contributed to Rotary's annual fundraiser, "Hollywood Nights.” It was a wonderful evening. We are grateful to the many who donated to the silent auction. The proceeds from the fundraiser go directly to Rotary's Scholarship Endowment Fund for High School Seniors. Students of the month Eighth grader, Karissa Donaldson and Junior, Courtney Lakey were Rotary Students of the Month. Karissa was honored for being a great student and team player. She excels at art, volleyball, knowledge bowl and track. Courtney Lakey was recog- nized for her high achievements in Math and accounting, (she placed 4th in the State Future Business Leaders of America contest). She is a National Honor Student and a puppeteer with Applebee puppets. Briana Goodwin from the Port Orford Ocean Resource Team (POORT) gave a preview of Saturday's 2nd Annual Water Festival for children and families. There are many interactive, enjoyable displays educating young people about preserving our water resources. There are new booths like the Planting Booth and an Inflatable Salmon Tent and old favorites like the Dissection Booth, Fish Printing, Plankton Races and the watershed playground trailer made by Kathy Boden and Statia Ryder. Dates to remember April 25th: district-wide work- day. Rotarians throughout the district will be working on serv- ice projects. We will be cleaning up Highway 101 from Battle Rock to Sixes River. Lifeboat Station open The Port Orford Lifeboat Station is open for the season. The museum, operated as a cooperative effort by the Point Orford Heritage Society and the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, showcases the former U.S. Coast Guard station with interpretive displays and exhibits, including a restored 36-foot motor lifeboat that served at the station. The museum is open Thursday through Monday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and is located on the grounds of the Port Orford Heads State Park. Admission to the park and museum are free. The Heritage Society is a non-profit organization and is seeking volunteers to serve as hosts or on various committees. Supportive instructors in local communities or online will assess where you are with your educa- tional skills, and work with you to move forward towards your equivalency diploma. The battery of subjects includes Writing, Math, Social Sciences, Science and Reading. And, best of all, the classes are affordable and you can work at your own speed. Each term, students register and pay a $25 fee, and with that fee can attend any Southwestern GED class, or more than one, including the online version. Classes in Curry include Adult Basic Education, for those whose skills may be below high school level. Registration may be limited, so potential students are encouraged to contact college offices immedi- ately to reserve their slot. Classes are held each term in each Curry com- munity. Port Orford's class is held on Thursdays from 5 to 8 p.m. at the new Port Orford Library, with instructor Francie McLeod.
