Walk beside me that we may be as one.” — Ute The Wedding vows are mar- velous when a young couple decides to build a life together. It is still beautiful 40 years later when you decide to renew those vows in a celebration of achievement. Mostly the 50th year is celebrated; however, ill health can hurry that along. We have two daughters and they arose to the occasion and put on a beautiful celebration for us. The Christian Center was filled to overflow with people and ruby and pearl balloons. The wedding cake was the most beautiful one I have ever seen and there were roses everywhere. The celebration was a potluck and where the several feet of table were set up, there happened to not be enough room to hold all the Water Festival is a big hit great food. People ate until the scales walked out of the room! Ham, Turkey and Chicken and noodles were on the menu. There were 163 people (at least) that joined the celebration to help us fill the happiness meter to over- flow. I have written about how important friends are in all of our lives. My heart was very touched by all of the well wishers. As a matter of fact I hope that my article can serve as a thank you to you friends gave of your time to be with us. Our daughters are the first on this list, they came from pretty far away to do this party for us and it was so beautiful, that I am sure are hearts are warmed for evermore! Special thanks to our church, bridge group, bible study, and ole cronies! Most of all we want to thank the people of Port Orford that have accepted us as friends. Marriage is not an easy thing, as you know. It takes many things to keep it going and to keep two peo- ple together. We talked about that and discovered that we do not know, just what has caused it, however, we are grateful. For one thing, we decided back in 69 that we did not want to accumulate husbands or wives for the rest of our lives. Something built up for this many years is a better way, at least for us. We do want to thank some oth- ers for their special support: First Community Church, Charley Valentine, Christian Center , Shawn Lashway, Brenda Dells, the cake maker, Lou Ann Lane, Mr. Dells too - pictures, Ruby Wagner - Piano, Barbara Tucker, Jamin Scofield - Guitar, Linda Foster the Photographer Hard Rain Cafe, Sherina & Samantha Winslow, Last of all, Harrison Winslow, Greg, Patti & Anthony Lane, who carried the ring so well, Linda & Jason Crockett, four years old!, Connie & John Heida, Dan & Kaylee Ells and all our Sunday school Kids. Thank you friends for all your congratulations and best wishes, and for your being there for our party. Traditionally we have held the Fine Art Show on Labor Day weekend, but this year we are having just one Fine Art show, so this is the one artists of the region are encour- aged to enter. This will be a festive cultural event with a reception at the library on Friday eve, May 22nd, with archeologist and cul- tural historian of the Coquille tribe, Mr. Don Ivy as keynote speaker. On Saturday at 2pm horticulturalist and historian Nancy Appling will give a talk at Theatre 101 on the signifi- cance of Cedar Trees in Native American and Oregon history. Following Ms. Appling's presen- tation , there will be a Jazz Jam at 3:30 in the theatre. Sculpture and "treasures" made from Port Orford Cedar, as well as other woods will be displayed in the Freedom of Speech Room at the Port Orford Library all weekend. Two- dimensional art will be exhibit- ed in the Arts Building at Seaside Plaza Saturday and Sunday. The "Midnight Serenaders" and their danceable music spon- sored by the Kinsman Foundation. We have a wonderful team working on this and you are part of it. Please join us. You can download an artist's application from www.portorfordart.com. Art work is due by May 2nd. Tickets for the "Midnight Serenaders" will be available at the Funzone for $10 or $15 at the door. The Cedar Festival is sponsored in part by Coos Curry Electric, City of Port Orford, Chetco Credit Union, and Seacrest Motel. — By Elaine Roemen FEMA gives Bandon RFPD a grant The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) awarded $86,070 from the Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) pro- gram to Bandon Rural Fire Protection District #8. Nationally, the fiscal year (FY) 2008 AFG awards will provide approximately $500 million to fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical service organizations throughout the country. “This direct funding is essen- tial to train and equip our first responders who protect lives and property against all hazards in our communities each day,” Is your roof leaking? The Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) pro- gram is an important component of the Administration’s larger, coordinated effort to strengthen the nation’s overall level of pre- paredness. The grants enable local fire departments and emergency medical services organizations to purchase or receive training, conduct first responder health and safety programs, and buy equipment and response vehi- cles. Volunteer day set at Driftwood School On May 16th Driftwood Elementary is going to have a volunteer day to remove non native plants from our wetlands. The wetlands are located behind the Driftwood school on Washington Street. This volun- teer day is from 10:00am to 2:00pm. There will also be interpretive walks by the stu- dents. May 16th is a state wide vol- unteer day with SOLV. SOLV is a group of people who want to make the world a better place. South Coast Watershed is help- ing with restoration education and has been a presence in the school for years. Some of the things we have already studied in our wetlands is, water quality, wildlife survey, mapping, and photography.
