Port Orford News April 22, 2009 • Page 3 Viewpoints Vote yes on police levy In response to last week’s comments by Dr. Fullmer and the Editor of Port Orford Today; I urge a “yes” vote on the upcoming ballot measure for a reduced Police Levy for the fol- lowing reasons: First, as a past member of the City Council it was felt that the Police Department was over- sized at that time and that popu- lar sentiment did not favor con- tinuing down that path. Thus the levy was soundly defeated. Today, we have a proposed levy which will cost less then the one we have now, yet keep a police department more suited for this small community. If the levy does not pass we will no doubt lose our police department and city court, as well as, all of the police reserves. In light of uncertain economic times ahead it is more important than ever before to plan for the safety of our town and take responsibility for our future by passing this measure. During the week of April 19th-25th the nation is celebrat- ing the 36th annual National Volunteer Week, and Curry County Home Health & Hospice would like to honor the volunteers throughout Curry County who tirelessly share their time and talent. The 2009 theme for National Volunteer Week is "Celebrating People in Action." The theme captures the meaning behind this signature week, which was designated by executive order by President Richard Nixon in 1974…honoring individuals who dedicate themselves to tak- ing action and solving problems in their communities. It is inspiring and encouraging watching people seek ways to engage in their community, meeting our challenges not as isolated individuals, but as members of a community, with all of us working together. This is how the volunteers of Curry County would be described. Volunteers in our communi- ties serve in the schools, fish- eries, parks, work with animals, in government, fight fires, keep us safe, and in healthcare to name just a few areas of service. We invite you to join with us in honoring these wonderful and fantastic volunteers. On a personal note, we would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the 200 hospice volunteers who over the course of the last 8 months have given over 12,000 hours of services with the express purpose of improving the quality of life to individuals receiving end of life care. You all are truly amazing and it is a privilege to work along side of you. Thank you for everything you do, which is quite a lot! My homeowners insurance premium with State Farm in 2008 ws $547. And in 2009 was $514 for essentially identical cov- erage. I have not missed any points. “ire protection district” means just what it says, “fire protec- tion,” not “police protection.” Firemen put out fires. Policemen enforce the laws. (Secondary offupations have been described by some as equip- ment polishing and dnut eating respectively.) No homeowners insurance rates are based on “police protection disricts.” (If there is such a thing.). There may be many reasons to vote for or against the police levy. Mr. Marohl’s misperceptions of his insurance issues with Farmers Insurance of Oregon most certainly are not one of them. Respectfully. Sincerely, Paula Cracas, Port Orford Please suport the police levy I drove back to Port Orford after a long day of work in Coquille in order to attend the "Town Hall Meeting" on the Police Levy. I even got there early in order to get a parking place and a good seat. The City Council and full staff were assembled, both newspapers were present. Our two police officers and most reserve officers, either in or out of uniform, were there. Officer Dresser carried his newborn son,Tobias, in his arms to his first "Town Hall Meeting." Only ... " the "Town" didn't show up! Nella Abbott, Port Orford To be continued ... by Pastor Doug Jamieson I f you had seen the humble abode that my family moved into around 1959 or 1960, I am certain you wouldn't have been very impressed by the design and building construction. The view on the other hand was spectacular. Every day I experi- enced the treasure of looking up the valley and gazing at the moun- tains. Drifting up from below our house was the sound of Hubbard Creek. Today, people will buy CD's, just to copy the sound of a moun- tain stream or small creek, in hopes of hearing something calm- ing to their nerves. I heard it on a daily basis. Yes, it was calming to my nerves. Other than the fact that I came from a long her- itage in the Port Orford area, there wasn't Doug Jamieson much that one would consider successful in my future, both near and far. I want to encourage the young (and old) entrepreneurs of Port Orford, not to dream too small. In my lifetime thus far I have already achieved my short and long-term goals. College, career, family, and a warm place to retire every evening. Not to mention friends, and hobbies that I truly enjoy. Outside of old age (which depends on how I feel today), there is only a few main goals that I look forward to; seeing my own family grow up and venture out into their own careers, and obvi- ously to me, finding Heaven open and Jesus arms held out awaiting entry to the age old promises that have been carried down for two thousand years. If you will set your mind to your goals and work towards them, you will surely reach your dreams. So, dream on and don't lose heart. You will be surprised at what can be accomplished.
