TRACK TEAM SPRINGS INTO ACTION By Quinn Allen As spring peeked around the corner, so did the be- ginning of track. March 9th was the first practice with a large attendance, and a brutal workout to students. The next day, you could easily spot students that participated in the first day of practice by cries of sore muscles, slow movements, arms reaching out for extra support while sitting down slowly, and the walk that even looked painful. Regardless of the first few days of excruciating practice, muscles soon adapted, and the 2009 Pacific Track Team emerged from the hard work, and sweat. The teams’ ranks go as follows: Seniors; Reed Brady, Shawn Culley, Chris Greene, Tim Maynard, Heather Valentine, Julian Carter, and Phillip Maddi. Juniors; Devon Ashdown, Jesse Culley, Joel Everest, Brett Maynard, Scott Mecum, Darren Pogwizd, Shawnee Potter, Greg Puhl, Terry Redding, and Cora Wahl. Sophomores; Matt Brady, Wren Carter, Cassidy Duerson, Manuel Finley, Jeremy Johnston, Harley King, Michael Parry, Mariza Pascasio, Jessie Paul- son, Peter Swenson, and Josh Valentine. Freshman; Brittney Glines, Charlie Jensen, and Jonathan Everest. March 17th brought on the first meet in Bandon. Julian Carter told of the meet enthusiastically. “We really rocked it! The team got 3rd, and if we would have had a 4x1 team we would have taken first, even if we had got last! Reed Brady took 1st in the triple jump. Jesse Culley came in 1st in shot-put. Terri Redding ran into 1st in the 800 meter run, and we did it all without our big star Wren Carter!” The season looks promising as the second track meet proved, held in Reedsport on March 31st. With such a large turnout of athletes this year, it has really proved valuable for the promise of state this year. During practices, students have been working hard, as was proved when the boys team won on Tuesday. The Friday meet went well to. Coach Stallard com- mented on a few of the athletes’ progress. “Reed Brady is undefeated in the triple jump. Jesse Culley has won javelin and shot-put numerous times. Terry Redding is running re- ally well in the 800, Charlie Jensen and Jonathan Everest is doing great as well.” The whole team has been working hard, and hard work has been paying off. Stallard is hoping for the district title, and to qualify as many as possible for state.
