A group gathered at Pacific High School on Tuesday, April 7 to watch Superintendent Ruby Price, Principal Tony Jones, Curry Health Department Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Patty Savage, and Student Government President Phillip Maddi cut the ribbon to open the School Based Health Center. Sponsored by the Curry Department of Health, the Center will provide a variety of services one day a week for the students of the 2CJ School District. Ruby Price praised Dr. Janine Jason and School Based Health Center Coordinator Linda Morgan for bringing the concept and a lot of enthusiasm to the 2CJ Board. State statistics show that teenagers are the most underserved when it comes to health care needs. Having a Health Center where they go to school every day will help to keep students in the classroom, concentrating on their studies. The School Board voted to pro- ceed with the project last sum- mer and the Superintendent set up an Advisory Committee to assist with the facility, raise Contributed photo Phillip Maddi, Student Government President; Tony Jones, PHS Principal; Ruby Price, Superintendent, Patty Savage, CCHD Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, cut the centerʼs ribbon. public awareness, and gather resources and funding. They tried retirement for one and a half years and Jerry got antsy and wanted back busy again. They had built two restaurants previous in their lives together both in North Bend and Winchester Bay. So to Port Orford they came and here they are operating a seafood restaurant on the waterfront. I must get in a kid to “Pat” as we needed her photo and she said, “Oh I have got to put on my lipstick”. I laughed and said, “Pat the photos are in black and white, nobody will know you haven’t freshened up”— but she PON photo by Brice Wagner Pat McGriff is shown with a tray full of great food in front of one of Griffʼs display cases. went and did her lady thing any- way! For the Port Orford News It occurred to me that our new residents may not know what or who The Common Good is. Simply put, we are Port Orford’s only free food pantry, clothing closet and miscellaneous item reuse facility. We are here to assist those in need. Our location is behind Ray’s Food Place. We are open the first 4 Wednesdays of the month from 10-12 and 1-3:15. Our staff is completely volunteer. We fund raise by collecting Ray’s Food Place grocery receipts we have a drop in savings account at Chetco for those wish- ing to contribute money. We also have several food drives a year, and bake sales working with “Delectable Desserts,” a part of the Friends of the Common Good. We especially enjoy the bake sales. We have some scrumptious bakers ! Often we put out a needs list. In this economy we accept almost anything that is clean, mended, and usable by the work See COMMON page 3 Port Orford Water Festival weekend has arrived By Briana Goodwin For the Port Orford News Do you want to learn more about watersheds while having fun?
