Library offering ‘Oregon Reads’ program throughout April Many more Oregon Reads events are coming up Port Orford and Langlois Public Libraries are in the midst of celebrating Oregon's sesqui- centennial (150 years of state- hood) by participating (with all of the Oregon counties) in Oregon Reads 2009. Two events are on Friday, April 17: At 3 p.m. Port Orford Library - Apples to Oregon: An hour of fun activities that cen- ters around this wonderful book (for pre-school through elemen- tary-age children). At 7 p.m. Langlois Library- Movie Night: Rashomon, the classic Japanese movie. On Saturday, April 18, 2 p.m. at Port Orford Library- Can't You Hear the Whistle Blowin?: Logs, Lignite, and Locomotives in Coos County. Local author Bill Lansing will discuss his railroad book that documents the development of logging rail- roads that came to Coos County in the 1870s. From back woods engines and wooden rails to town cele- brations and bay-spanning bridges, this beautiful book brings to life a time and place vital to the history of Oregon and the West. Library events April is an busy and important month at your libraries. Port Orford and Langlois Public Libraries are celebrating Oregon Reads 2009 for the entire month of April. The Port Orford and Langlois Public Libraries work together to provide quality programs for the community. Mark your calendars or cut out this article so that you do not miss these wonderful events. All programs are free of charge. ◆ Langlois - Friday, April 17 at 7 p.m.- Movie Night: Rashomon, the classic Japanese film. ◆ Langlois - Saturday, April 18 from 11:00-1:00 p.m. - Langlois Library Volunteer's Tea. ◆ POL - Sunday, April 26 at 2 p.m.- Women Photographers of Oregon: A Chautauqua Program. ◆ POL - Wednesday, April 29 at 3 p.m. - Volunteer recognition reception. The Friends of the Langlois Library recently hosted their 4th annual Community Ice Cream Social at the Langlois Public Library. About sixty adults and children came together to enjoy delicious ice cream sundaes and applaud the guest of honor. Each year, the Friends honor an individual who has helped North Curry become an even better place to live through their gift of time, energy and commitment. This year Jo Rieber, volunteer extraordinaire, was the recipient of much applause and apprecia- tion. Jo, a resident of Langlois, has her fingers in many pots, devot- ing time just about every day to North Curry organizations. For quite a few years, she has been engaging the children at Head Start with her delightful songs and infectious smile, and those of us who attend any of the Rotary fundraisers know Jo is a familiar face at these events, selling tickets, serving food, or drumming up donations. In the past, Jo has been very active with North Curry Literacy and NCFCC, and is the driving force behind the Friends of the Langlois Library. She has also been very involved with helping the new health center at Pacific High School come to fruition. The event will be followed by the regularly scheduled council meeting at 7 p.m. Supper April 10th – Good Friday – 12pm – Good Friday Service April 12th – Easter Morning Mass – 8:30am – A brunch will be served after Mass with sur- prises for the children. Port master plan can be seen at library The draft of the Port of Port Orford’s Facility Master Plan is now available at the Library and the Port Office. The plan is the work of David Cheramy of Maritime Consultants International. Public comment is welcome and encouraged, please send any comments or suggestions to portoffice@verizon.net. Theatre 101 is seeking foam We need foam! Theatre 101 needs any scrap foam that anyone might wish to donate for the set for our next production. Port Orford Cedar and Fine Arts Festival is coming The Port Orford Cedar and Fire Arts Festival will be held on Memorial Day weekend, May 22, 23 and 24. Entry application to be brought in to Port Orford Art Council Gallery on May 2. The shows are open to all artists in Port Orford, Langlois, Gold Beach and Bandon. There will be two categories and two locations for displaying the work. (1. "Treasures in Wood" will feature pieces of work made from Port Orford Cedar and/or other types of wood. This work will be on display in the Freedom of Speech Room at the Port Orford Library on Memorial Day weekend. ( 2.)"Spirit of Port Orford" a fine Arts exhibit of 2 dimen- sional and non-wooden 3- dimensional work. Demos to host forum on single payer healthcare The forum will be held on Wednesday, April 15 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and will feature the Movie, HR676: The Single Payer Solution. ODA will help pay for cost of organic certification The Oregon Department of Agriculture continues to offer reimbursement for organic certi- fication costs from U.S. Department of Agriculture accredited certifiers. This reimbursement is also available to Oregon growers or processors renewing their certi- fication. All qualified growers or processors who obtained organ- ic certification or renewed their organic certification during the designated two-year period are encouraged to apply. Reimbursements are limited to 75 percent of fees paid, with a maximum of $750 for each year. Authorized by the Farm Bill, the program is designed to assist producers, handlers, and proces- sors of agricultural products in obtaining certification under the national organic guidelines. USDA originally provided funds to reimburse certifications from October 2008 through September 2009 but added funds to provide reimburse- ments for the previous certifica- tion year, beginning October 1, 2007.
