Police report March 27 Police assisted in peacefully resolving a verbal dispute at a local residence. Police were dis- patched due to a potential for the dispute to escalate in to a violent confrontation. No further action taken. March 28 Police were called to the scene of an unattended death at a local residence. The dece- dent’s family has been notified and will be making arrange- ments. We would like to express our condolences to the family. March 29 Police responded to a harass- ment complaint. Two person had been in a verbal altercation and threats were made. Juvenile was contacted with par- ents and school officials. Juvenile cited. 3.) Police assisted Driftwood officials with a wall locker check. Nothing found. April 2 Report of juveniles in rest- room at Buffington Park. Three females, and one male in the same bathroom at the same time. Subjects counseled and released. No further action taken. April 3 Police received a report of a dog at large in the 12th street area. Dog located, owners had the animal on a temporary adop- tion from shelter. Situation resolved without incident. Traffic enforcement was light this week, with 10 citations issued for speeding, with six warnings also issued for speed. Two seatbelt warnings were issued, along with four pedestri- an violation warnings. five warnings were issued for vari- ous equipment violations. The speeder of the week, 47 miles per hour in a 30 mile zone. Driver was taking his grandfather to a doctor appoint- ment, driving grandfather’s vehicle. Pedestrian Safety grants awarded Nineteen police departments and five county sheriff offices in Oregon have been awarded over 86 thousand dollars in overtime grants to improve safety for pedestrians. The Bicycle Transportation Alliance and the Willamette Pedestrian Coalition will work with ODOT to admin- ister the program. The grants enable enforce- ment agencies to highlight the importance of pedestrian safety through crosswalk enforce- ments. The Port Orford Police Department has participated in the program in the previous two years. The operations remind the pub- lic of the need to slow down and allow pedestrians time to cross the street. The primary purpose of these operations is to educate motorists, and to make them aware of their responsibilities under the law. These opera- tions increase compliance and awareness of Oregon’s “Stop and Stay Stopped” Law and the law that vehicles must stop at crosswalks when a vehicle in an adjacent lane is already stopped. The Police Departments in Oregon that are participating in the grant this year are; Region 1: Hillsboro, Lake Oswego, Tualatin, and Tigard Police Departments; Hood River County Sheriff Department Region 2: Amity, Aurora, Dallas, Independence, Lincoln City, Rockaway, Stayton, and Yamhill Police Departments; Lincoln County and Yamhill County Sheriff Departments. Region 3: Medford, North Bend, Port Orford, and Talent Police Departments; Grants Pass Department of Safety and Jackson County Sheriff Departments. Region 4: Prineville Police Department. Region 5: Ontario and Umatilla Police Departments Oregon’s Stop and Stay Stopped Law requires motorists to allow pedestrians in both marked and unmarked cross- walks the lane of travel plus the next lane. It applies when the vehicle is turning or going straight. At controlled intersec- tions motorists must allow pedestrians the lane of travel plus 6 feet. Man undergoing evaluation after attempt to elude A 38-year old north Portland man was taken into custody and is currently undergoing a mental evaluation at a Brookings-area hospital following an attempt to elude state, county and city police officers for about 25 miles on Highway 101. The man's name is withheld pending the mental evaluation and any decision to charge him related to this incident. On April 3 at approximately 2:10 p.m. Oregon State Police (OSP) Senior Trooper Jeff Johnson observed a rented 2009 Toyota Camry northbound on Highway 101 at the Oregon / California border traveling 90 mph near milepost 362. Unknown to the trooper, California police agencies had also received a driving com- plaint on this car. Senior Trooper Johnson tried to stop the Toyota but it attempted to elude northbound at speeds in excess of 80 mph. As it approached the city of Brookings the trooper terminat- ed his attempt to stop it and backed off while keeping it in sight. Brookings police and a Curry County sheriff deputy attempted to stop the car in Brookings where it nearly struck a pedes- trian crossing the road. The car continued northbound out of Brookings with officers trying to keep it in sight. OSP Sergeant Scott Punch assumed lead near milepost 344 as the Toyota's speeds reached in excess of 100 mph. Near milepost 337, an OSP Fish & Wildlife trooper deployed a spike strip and the car stopped shortly after running over it. State, county and city officers shut down the highway as they tried to talk the driver out of the car, but the driver refused and locked himself inside. The offi- cers subsequently broke out two windows through which a Curry County deputy deployed a Taser to gain compliance and allow officers to take the driver into custody at 2:23 p.m. OSP transported the man to Curry General Hospital where he is undergoing a mental evalu- ation. The investigation is continu- ing and any enforcement deci- sion is pending. DUI driver hits OSP car and trooper An Oregon State Police patrol car was damaged and a trooper received minor bruising when an intoxicated driver crashed into the patrol car during a traf- fic stop on the southern Oregon coast south of Brookings. On April 4 at approximately 12:30 a.m. OSP Trooper David Wehner was standing on the passenger side of his patrol car while he had another vehicle stopped on Highway 101 near milepost 358 when the patrol car was struck by an intoxicated driver.
