For the PON
If you have experienced
Kelly Thibodeaux and Etouffee
then you know their jazzy,

life, the kind you can't resist
dancing to. On Valentines Day
we are throwing a Mardi Gras

Beer and wine will be avail-
able.

BRIEFS, from page 6
of North County, as it will provide addi-
tional water supply in areas that are not
hydrated.
We began the month of December with
our Holiday party. We invite the families
of our firefighters and ambulance person-
nel. This is a time for us to show our
appreciation for all the sacrifices our fam-
ilies make on our behalf. When we
receive a page, we drop whatever we are
doing and instantly respond to our call.
Sometimes we do not return for six or
more hours. After a long call, we still
have several hours of cleanup and retro-
fitting our equipment so we are ready to
respond to the next call. We know these
hours can be long for our families and
truly appreciate their patience. This party
is an opportunity for us all to get together,
enjoy a meal, and spend time relaxing.
It is also when we announced our
Firefighter of the Year. This year our
deserving firefighter is Jim Sigman. He
received a special jacket with this desig-
nation.
This quarter we responded to a variety
of difficult and demanding calls. Our
commitment to training and safety has
resulted in excellent responses. We can
never predict what type of call we will
have, nor exactly what will be needed. We
continue to be fortunate to train with
Sixes and Langlois Fire, enabling great
mutual aid responses when necessary. In
small communities, a multi-agency
response is a great asset. We are grateful
for the excellent response from Port
Orford Community Ambulance, Curry
County Deputies, and the State Police as
well.
We look forward to the upcoming quar-
ter. We expect to spend some of our train-
ing time on maintaining our necessary
recertification for State requirements. This

Pathogens, Hazmat driver training, etc.
We also expect to continue training with
Sixes and Langlois Fire in mutual aid
responses. We also plan on training with
Port Orford Community Ambulance and
Port Orford Police Department. We are all
frequently on incidents together and have
seen how training together results in the
best and safest possible outcome.
Our Extrication tools were just serviced
and remain in excellent condition, and we
expect to train extensively with them,
hopefully with some instructors from
other agencies. Our priority remains the
safety of our firefighters, responders, and
community.
We look forward to training with some
new volunteers. If you are interested in
joining the Port Orford Volunteer Fire
Department, please call Chief Gayle
Wilcox at 332-0445. We are always hop-
ing to add committed men and women to
our roster of volunteers. We are honored
and proud to serve.
Respectfully submitted,
Gayle Wilcox

Department
Thank a fire fighter
Oregon’s first Fire Service Appreciation
Day will be Sunday, Jan. 27.
The Oregon Legislature has established
the day to “honor all those in the Oregon
fire service who work to save lives and
property, from firefighters who risk their
safety and well-being in the course of
their duties to the unsung heroes of fire
prevention, education, and public infor-
mation working behind the scenes.”
The date was chosen because the first
fire company in the U.S. was organized in
Boston on Jan. 27, 1678.
The PON would like to take this oppor-
tunity to thank all the members of the Port
Orford, Volunteer Fire Department, the
Sixes Rural Fire Department, the Langlois
Fire Department, and the Coos Forest
Protective Association for all their hard
work and sacrifice.
Hughes House seeks help
In 2008 Living History was presented
on four different days to delighted visitors
at historic Hughes House. The Friends of
Cape Blanco would like to expand the
program during the summer of 2009, per-
haps twice a month during June, July, and
August.
We are in need of a few women who
would be able to devote the time neces-
sary to learn a short script, rehearse, and
spend a day (or more than one day) pre-
senting the skit at Hughes House. Needed
are a woman or two close to age 70 to
portray Jane Hughes and two or three
women close to age 30 to portray Annie
Hughes, Jane's daughter-in-law. If we
have at least two women for each charac-
ter, we will have a backup in case some-
one can't be present on the day of a
planned presentation. Costumes are pro-
vided. If interested, please call Shirley or
Milt Nelson at 332-9002.

their best year in terms of numbers of vis-

The facility received a 24.5 (out of 30

‘Formula for Change’
I came across this little "How to plant
your garden" formula, which certainly can
be related to renewing our thinking
renewal, which will allow unlimited pos-
sibilities.
Plant three rows of peas:
1. Peace of mind
2. Peace of heart
3. Peace of soul
Plant four rows of squash:
1. Squash gossip
2. Squash indifference
3. Squash grumbling
4. Squash selfishness
Plant four rows of lettuce:
1. Let tuce be faithful
2. Let tuce be kind
3. Let tuce be patient
4. Let tuce really love one another
No garden is without turnips:
1. Turn ip for meetings
2. Turn ip for service
3. Turn ip to help one another
To conclude our garden simply add
thyme
1. Thyme for each other
2. Thyme for family
3. Thyme for friends
Water freely with patience and cultivate
with Love. There is much we will harvest
from our garden because we reap what
we sow. In our New World shall we all
renew our thinking each day within each
situation?
