Present were President Scott Luhr, Commissioners Ed Dowdy, Bob Mielenz, Dave Rickel, and Stanley Johnson, Port Manager Gary Anderson, City Council liaison John Hewitt, and Mayor Jim Auborn. Also present was the entire board of the Port Orford Ocean Resource Team, led by Leesa Cobb. The commissioners moved rapidly through a variety of items on the agenda. Anderson Soccer reported that he had talked to John Craig of the Army Corps of Engineers, and the ACOE was concerned about the use of a pipeline dredge in Port Orford, preferring the use of a clamshell. Anderson said three bids for dredging had been received, and he was “optimistic and hopeful.” The Port had received a letter from the ACOE, stating that Port Orford was not going to be given any of the emergency supplemental funds appropriated by Congress. But only a few lines from the bottom of the agenda, what seemed to be a rather routine and short meeting quickly got bogged down when the commis- sioners got to the item regarding a request to approve a resolution See POORT, page 6 Democratic Party report Demos kick up heels at HQ opening There will be an organizational meet- ing held at 7 p.m.,Thursday, Aug. 28, at PHS to seek volunteers for the coming soccer seasons. — Page 6 By Carol Berger PON Staff writer A grant ʻOver The Rainbowʼ has received a hefty grant to help with their work. — Page 7 Coming up Soccer meeting There will be an organizational meeting for volun- teers at 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 28 at PHS. Port Orford Rotary Club Local Democrats threw a party in the parking lot at Battle Rock Wayside to cele- brate the opening of Port Orford’s Democratic Party headquarters next to Java John’s on Saturday August 16. Even before the official start time for the event, some atten- dees were hanging out in Java John’s, listening to live music by the Pete Lenihan Trio or drifting back and forth into the new headquarters, where they could check out a table full of campaign materials for many of the Democratic candidates running in this area. Another table featured Obama T-shirts, bumper stickers, and pins, available for a set donation. Oregon Secretary of State Bill Bradbury arrived shortly after the beginning of the event and rallied an enthusias- tic crowd by saying “I wanted to be here today to officially dedicate the Democratic head- quarters in Port Orford.
