Pacific Wins First Three Contests
A 22-polnt perform ance, by
Pacific High School freshman
Rbn Branham proved tobejtoo
much for the visiting Tiger
Frosh Thursday evening as the
young Pirates won the opener
59-30.
Seven proved to be the pop
ular number for Bandon . . .
with Wayne Stolz, Jim Titus
and John Hecht evenly dividing
21 of the Tigers’ counters.
Each team committed Its
share of personals . . . with
Tigers Jim Woods, Titus and
Hecht all leaving via the foul
route . . . as did Pacific’s
Mike Price.
In the free-throw shooting
department, the winners were
slightly sharper than Bandon
sinking 14-of-35 fon 40% while
the Tigers dumped In 10 of 29
(33%).
Pacific scored exactly twice
as many fielders as did the
Tigers (22-11), paced by Bran
ham’s eight.
Neither team could muster
up much of an offense In the In
itial qu arter—which ended with
the Pirates in front 8-4.
Pacific also led 23-16 at the
Interm ission, and eight points
from the field in the third
quarter by Price paced Pacific
to a 41-24 third-quarter ad
vantage.
Also scoring for the Tigers
were Steve F e rre (5), and Mike
MacDonald and Harold Hlleman,
each with 2.
Other P irate sco rers were
Price 13, Curt Lords 6, Wayne
McCune, Jack Tucker, Ralph
Cope and Milt Wilson, each with
4, and Chris Jensen with 2.

Pacific took advantage of
three last-m inute Bandon mis
cues to capture their Tuesday
night hoop encounter with the
Bandon T igers, 71-66.
The scrappy Pirates Ignored
the fact that Bandon had held
the pat-hand for the first three
periods and came on strong at
the end to win. Leading 35-31
at the half and maintaining a
52-49 edge after three quarters,
Bandon’s surprisingly strong
run-and-gun tactics fell apart
under the taller Pacific on
slaught; but it wasn’t until 5-10
guard David Bjerg s a n k a
cripple lay-up and followed I1, up
with a free throw at 0:46 that
Pacific could breathe a little
easier. Ahead 69-66, the Pur-
ple-and-Whlte speedsters then
added Insult to injury by thwart
ing three Bandon retaliations.
Collapsing under a taut press,
Bandon c o m m i t t e d t h r e e
straight turnovers—two bad
passes and an off-the-mark
field-goal attempt—within the
la st 42 seconds of the ball
game. The buzzer sounded with
Bob Valet hitting Pacific’s final
pair of points to produce the
final 71-66 count.
Carl Johnson, a 6-2 junior,
led the P irates’ scoring with 20
counters. The lanky, bespectac
led su rprise also pulled down
16 rebounds—11 of those while
he was on offense—as he proved
too much for the middle of the
Bandon zone. His 20-polnt total
came on 21 attempts from the
field; all but one of these at
tempts occurred Inside the key,
which adds proof to the fact

The Pirates, led by Carl

Pacific employed a man-to-

to a tighter zone to shut off the
Trojans’ attack.
Rebound control led by John

twice as many shots. Both
teams however, were extreme
