It didn’t matter that this sea­
son’s Pirates hit with more
authority and move the ball
much better. Pacific was unable
to get started until Coquille all
but had the game clinched.
The visitors kept possession
only once beyond the minimum
three-downs-and-punt in the first
half while Coquille ground with
hardly a hitch to a 25-0 cushion
at halftime and, from there, to
easy victory.
Drives of 61, 36, and 71 yards
—plus Reiner’s punt return—
were convincingly a l i g n e d
against Pacific’s 38 total net
yards at the halfway rest.
The Scott McKenzie-led Pi­
rates matched the hosts yard-
for-yard in the second half and
produced a razzle-dazzle touch­
down but it was too lata to stop
th t flow of Coquille reserves into
the line-up in the late sftges.
Coquille marched back the
opening kickoff for a touchdown
to open door. Operating a
ground attack between the tac­
kles, the Red Devils covered 61
yards with the only pass of the
drive—a 10-yard Flug-to-Reiner
flat toss—bringing the six-point­
er. Reiner stepped off a 23-yard-
er and Owen burst for 10 at
points along the way.
Ted Thommen presented an­
other quick opportunity with a
fumble recovery on the ensuing
kickoff but the Satans, in turn,
lost a fumble at the Pacific 16.
When Pacific failed to move,
Reiner grabbed the punt and set
sail to make it 12-0.
Again Thommen offered a
"hance with a pass interception
at the Pacific 48—returning it to
the 36—and this time Coquille
made it pay. A clutch fourth-
down pass—Flug to Tim Roberts
for 33—put the ball at the start­
ing point for Owen’s four-yard
scoring shot.
Later in the second quarter,
Pacific’s only offensive success
in the first half—a 33-yard drive
to Coquille’s 29 which faultered
on downs—set the stage for a re­
turn trip by the Satans. A 19-
yard run by Owen, Reiner’s 18-
yarder, and two of 12 and 10
yards by Wright took the ball to
the three. Flug then hit George
Allen for the score to account
for the 25-0 bulge at intermis­
sion.
Allen scored again in the third
period on a nine-yard toss from
Flug and Owen’s 19-yard end
sweep in the fourth quarter took
care of Coquille’s scoring and
brought on the reserves.
Pacific got its touchdown on a
sudden one-play maneuver fol­
lowing a Coquille kickoff in the
third quarter. McKenzie spotted
Fred F ry with a short pass and,
with defenders converging, Fry
lateralled to Darrell Bjerg, who
shrugged one tackier and com­
pleted a 54-yard play.
Wright gained 81 yards in 14
carries, Owen was 13-for-77, and
Reiner 8-for-45 on the ground for
Coquille, to augment Flug’s aer­
ial antics.
McKenzie’s passing collected
106 yards on fi-of-19.

boaters working the tidewater
areas. Currently, fishing is only

fall salmon is yet to come.

South coast angling is a bit on
the slow side this week. The
smaller streams are dropping
rapidly and are almost too clear
while the larger streams appar­
ently lack fish.
The best catches the past few
days have been on the Sixes
River. A fair number of nice
chinook and jacks are being
taken from the tidewater holes
on lures or rce. Trollers, working
the lagoon are hooking a few
chinook up to 30 pounds during
high tide.
