Norwegian Student Is Guest OI Rotarían Families Port Orford News, Thursday, September 11, 1969—3 Sunday was the Rotary Club's annual picnic at Paradise Point and guest of honor was the club's foreign exchange student Miss Hege Bakken, of Skin, Norway, Miss Bakken arrived here Aug. 23 for 1969-70 school y e a r studies at Pacific high school. A year of study that does not count towards Norway's schol astic requirements. Hege,a tall, soft-spoken, light brown-haired attractive girl, is living with the Wayne Hodge family lor the first three months of the school year. The next semester she will live with the Glen(John)Mayeas,and the last three months, with the George Hahns. At Pacific, Miss Bakken is studying U.S.and World History, American Problems, E n g lis h , P.E. and Vocal,but as yet has n 't decided an her vocation. A lover of all animals, she hopes to follow this line. Miss Bakken began studying the Englishlanguage in the fifth grade in Norway and speaks the language fluently. The school she attends in Norway has >00 students and students are as signed subjects, rather than be ing able to have a selection as in America. Hege's father,who is deceased, was a neurosurgeon, and her mother is a child psychologist, but not practicing. She has a sister attending school in Den mark and a brother,Johan, will be attending his fifth year at the University of Washington m edical school studying neuro surgery. Miss Bakken said her home town has a climate similar to ours, and that she hopes to see more of Oregon. VISIT PARENTS Mrs. Leo Phillips and son of Port Orford journeyed to San Bernardino, Calif., to visit two sisters and parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Waldie. HELLO WEEK ON Battle Rock School is hold ing traditional “ Hello Week", Sept 8 through 12. During this week all staff and students will be wearing name tags. The week will end Friday,Sept. 12, with a “ Hello Party” in the Battle Rock Gym from 7 until 9 p. m. Miss Bakken's brother, Johan, was also on the scene. HILDEBRANDS VACATION Mr. and Mrs. Harley Hilde brand of Langlois took a 30-day vacation recently. They drove to Monticello, 111., to visit their daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Blacker and four children, and son, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Schwartz and baby. They also stopped in Oscela, Iowa, and visited Mrs. Eva Hilde brand and other relatives. They also spent three days having 2 new radiator put in their car. Coming back they visited the Grotto at West Bend, Iowa. This is made out of rocks that have been cut and polished then put together in a very impressive way to show the twelve stations of the cross, the tomb and many other beautiful things. Mrs. Hil debrand said it was a must, if you are traveling in that area. They also enjoyed Yellowstone National Park. PICNIC HELD The Community Church Sun day School held their annual potluck dinner at Humbug Park at 1 p.m. Sunday. Games for the children and a youngster- oldster softball game were en joyed. The day was closed by a vesper service conducted by Rev. Jamie France, Proberta, C a d ., formerly oi Port Orford. CHILDREN VISIT The Clarence (Flash) Owens were visited by their children for the weekend, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Huey and two boys and Mr. and Mrs. Terrance Owens, both of Eugene. IN COTTAGE GROVE Pauline Frye of Langlois went to Coos Bay over the weekend to visit Mr. and Mrs. Robert Couch and two children, they went on to Cottage Grove and visited old friends Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Umpleby, arriving home late Monday night. OUT OF HOSPITAL Mrs. John Marsh returned home after a two day trip to Medford for a medical exam ination. Her husband, John, was released from Southern Coos General Hospital and re turned to their home in Port Orford.
