jPort (Orford -Vcuis Vol.12 N o.21_________________________________________________________________________port Orford,Curry County, Oregcn 97465 Subcommittee Price: Ten Cents Thursday, August 21, 1969 Public Works Official To Retire Representative Rod McKen zie (R) Sixes, was named to the Subcommittee on Submerged and Submersible Lands, one of the three subcommittees de signated by Senator Robert Elf- strom (R) Salem, chairman of the legislative Land Board Ad visory Committee. Other members serving with McKenzie are: Rep.Jason Boe (D) Reedsport, chairman, and Rep.Tom Young, (R) Baker, a t torney. McKenzie said that since Ore gon is considered largely a com mon law state in so far as laws are concerned affecting riparian rights on submerged and sub mersible lands, there is need for careful review to provide great est protection for the irreduci ble school fund and to fit the times with increasing demands of recreation and industry. McKenzie said the subcom m ittee will report to the full committee and the full com m ittee in turn will advise the L a n d Board and recommend legislation, if it is necessary, to the legislature. McKenzie said many of the problems that come before the committee may require court solutions in lieu of legislative remedies. Public Works S u p t. Frank Morris, Sr., will retire from 14 years service with the city on December 31 of this year, it was decided in city council action at a special meeting Tuesday night. The action came after a sug gestion from water commission er Jim Peterson, who said he had a s k e d Morris to retire next month because of his age, 69. The commissioner said Morris had done a good job for the city, had worked well with him, but that he felt the position should be turned over to a younger man because the position was be coming increasingly more dif ficult because of the new sewer system and water system up grading. Morris, given an opportunity to make a statement to the council, said it was his under standing that he had been re hired last February for another four years but that he had plan ned on retiring the end of June, 1971, and would like to stay on the job until then. "I don't think the council realizes how much work is involved with the water system, " Morris told the coun cil, adding that he had tried to save the city money, had mis sed one vacation and was a l ways willing to work nights and weekends when routine or em ergency work demanded it.
